David Walter Olson met his Lord and Savior face to face on Sunday, March 24. Born in Grandy, Minnesota, on December, 24, 1939, Dave spent most of his life in northern Illinois where he met his beloved wife of 62 years, Sue (nee Grana), and married her in 1962. He graduated from Waukegan Township High School and attended Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, before graduating with a chemical engineering degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Dave spent his employment years at Abbott Laboratories, starting in research and development and retiring as director of strategic planning for the Hospital Products Division. Throughout his life he served at Immanuel Church in many capacities from Sunday School teacher and Awana leader to vice chairman, deacon chairman, and head of the 2015 Committee. He was highly involved with Immanuel’s mission as well as financial and management issues after his retirement from Abbott. In his retirement he also served on both the Lutheran General Hospital Foundation Board and the Clara Abbott Foundation Board.
What Dave will be remembered for most, though, is his kindness and genuine love of his God and of people. He valued his God and his family above everything else. He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughter, Pam (Dave) Gillaspie; grandchildren Bradley (Jackie) Gillaspie and Katie (Tristan) Hoppe; and sister Pauline (Skip) Kulle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Margaret Olson, and sister Marilyn Anthony.
A celebration of life service will be held at Immanuel Church in Gurnee, Illinois, on Thursday, March 28, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be served starting at 11:30 a.m. with time before and after the service to visit with family.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MarshFuneralHome.com for the Olson family.
