He graduated from Virden Community High School in 1949 and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in 1986. For a short period, he worked for Pillsbury in Springfield, but his greatest accomplishment in his working life was his service to the United States Navy, in which he served for 30 years until his retirement. During his active-duty service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the China Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He married the love of his life, Carla Traylor in Springfield, Illinois on December 22, 1972, and the two had almost 50 years together. Don loved being outdoors; he enjoyed swimming, fishing and baseball. He was a sports enthusiast and was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears. Don also enjoyed old cars and music and will be known for his dancing skills. His greatest joy though was his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don is survived by his wife, Carla; two daughters, Carrie (Dan) Brockman and Courtnee (Lyle) Bjoring; grandchildren, Wyatt, Finn and Connor.
In accordance with Don’s wishes, there will be a private burial at Fort Sheridan National Cemetery in Lake Forest, IL. He wanted everyone to remember the man he was: a husband, a father, grandfather, son, and friend.
