With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Helen V. Moran, better known as “Ma,” our beloved mother and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. Helen passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 9, 2021. She was in her 95th year.
Helen was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on December 28, 1925. Her parents, Americo and Rose Pacenti, raised her and her six siblings in North Chicago, a place she would call home for most of her life. For many years, Helen worked as a telephone supervisor at Illinois Bell. In 1946, she married James W. Moran. They had three sons, Patrick (Anever), Michael (Jacqueline), and James Jr.
Helen was known for her love of cooking and feeding. Her eggplant parmesan, fish balls, Italian gravy and spinach pizza were loved by all. Her grandchildren remember her plentiful candy drawer.
She was also known for her love of good conversation. She could often be seen sitting in her dining room on her bench, talking on the telephone to the dozens of people who called each day.
But perhaps Helen is best remembered for her role as a caretaker to anyone who entered her home. She was a selfless person who raised three sons, eight grandchildren, and countless others. She also took great pride in attending to her parents and siblings as their health declined.
Helen Moran was many things to many people. But to anyone who knew her, she was kind, considerate, and fiercely loyal. For generations, she was the stable force that remained just a phone call away. Her spirit will be carried by those who mourn her.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, June 11, 9:30 AM at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6401 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee, IL 60031. Online condolences may be expressed through www.legacy.com.
