Born on July 21, 1927, in North Chicago, Illinois, Hilary lived a long and meaningful life marked by kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family. On May 23, 1959, he married Florence “Jo” Dale, his devoted wife of 66 years, who survives him.
Hilary was the proud father of five children: Patricia “Patti” Dale, Ann (Steve) Ogonek, Kevin (Vanette) Dale, Mary Jo (Paul) Mack, and Erin Dale Gardner. He was a loving Papa to Alyssa (Andrew) Escobedo, Alexandra Ogonek, Hayley (Tim) Doyle, Nathan Mack, Emily (JJ) Delgado, Zack, Lauren, and Tyler Gardner. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren, Amelia Escobedo and Easton Doyle, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Catherine Dzieglewicz; sisters, Elenore, Josephine “Josie,” Frances, Lorrie, Sr. Mary Fortunate “Jessie,” Albina “Beanie,” Alyce, and Dolores “Dudsy”; and brothers, Stanley “Goldie,” Larry, and Willie.
Known by all as the nicest and funniest man around, Hilary had a gentle heart, an easygoing spirit, and a remarkable ability to bring warmth and laughter into every room. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and worked for 40 years as a lineman for Commonwealth Edison—a career that reflected both his strength and quiet dedication.
Hilary loved nothing more than gathering his family around a meal-especially dinner promptly at 5 o'clock. He especially enjoyed baking breads and rolls, a comforting gift he often shared with those he loved. He was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan to the very end, never missing a game on TV or radio. He proudly cheered them on through thick and thin and was especially thrilled to witness the Cubs win the World Series. Hilary's legacy is one of love and laughter. He leaves behind a family who adored him and countless memories of his quick wit, steady presence, and the deep love he gave so freely. He will be missed beyond measure, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hilary's memory to organizations supporting breast, colon, and lymphoma cancer research.
