A beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandpa, and friend to many, Richard (Dick) was born in Burlington, Iowa on June 24, 1923 and moved to Waukegan in 1937. He graduated from Waukegan High School in 1941 and soon thereafter joined the service.
He served in WWII in the Army Air Corp and was stationed in the South Pacific before his release with a medical discharge in 1943. After his time in the service, he returned to Waukegan and because of his love of all things on wheels or that fly, he went to work driving a downtown streetcar where he met his beloved Thelma as she ran to catch the streetcar each morning. After a three month engagement, they were married in 1947. Sometime after his marriage, he went to work for Civil Service at Great Lakes Navy Base where he retired after 25 years working in and heading up the motor pool. After his "retirement", he had various other jobs that he thoroughly enjoyed, amongst them driving an ambulance, driving a semi,
working for the Lake County Sheriff's Department and investigating auto accidents for the Illinois Attorney General.
Soon after his marriage, Dick came to a saving faith in Christ at Immanuel Baptist Church of Waukegan (now Immanuel Church of Gurnee), where he has been a member for almost 70 years. Having such a big heart for sharing Christ's love with others, Dick taught Sunday School for many years and also enjoyed several years of driving the church bus.
After raising his family in Waukegan and Gurnee Area, Dick lived the last 20+ years at his home in Lake Bluff and enjoyed spending time with his family and especially babysitting his grandkids throughout the years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Arthur Dietmeyer and Viola Hartley Williams, his infant sister, Shirley Anne Dietmeyer, and his brother, Robert A. Dietmeyer.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Thelma (Jamerson); his four children, Barbara Balberg (Dick), Fred Dietmeyer, Cheryl (Jim) Stewart, and Steve (Tina) Dietmeyer; and five grandchildren, Rebecca (Ben) Cullen, Brie Dietmeyer, Brad Dietmeyer, Jacob (Colleen) Dietmeyer, and Ellen Dietmeyer, and one great-grandson, Elias Dietmeyer, as well as many nieces and nephews and dear friends and loved ones. Service will be as follows: Visitation on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Marsh Funeral Home, Gurnee, Illinois from 5-8pm and 10-11 am Friday at church, followed by a celebration of life service on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Immanuel Church of Gurnee at 11am, with a lunch to follow. Burial will be at Warren Cemetery in Gurnee. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made/sent to: Immanuel Church of Gurnee, 2300 Dilleys Rd., Gurnee, IL.
