Not to say I’ll if the dead, but I knew Alan Saperstein well. Suffice it to say he had many flaws…

Alan, what can i say?  You were so smart, so kind, so delightful,  so caring for all the time i knew you.  It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with you.  You will be missed. 

Dr. Saperstein was a devoted physician and South Beach Psychiatric Center devotee. He touched so many lives during his 45year career. May Dr. Saperstein rest with God, and may God comfort his loved ones, family, friends, and colleagues as we mourn his loss. “Well done thy good and faithful one.” Matthew 25:21

My deepest sympathies. Dr Saperstein was brilliant, kind, and had a unique sense of humor. He will be sorely missed.

Dr. Saperstein was my  first psychiatrist. I believe it was 1993.  Even though it’s been a long time, I’ll always remember his kind heart like it was yesterday. Rest in peace Dr Saperstein 

My time with Dr. Saperstein was short but meaningful. He welcomed me into his office and even kept half of the room clean for me when we shared the space. Between the many moments of giving me investment advice and telling me about his experiences at SBPC, he showed me the joy and fulfillment he had in coming to work every day. His laughter when he described his colleagues as “they’re real nice” spoke volumes of his encouraging presence and the outlook he had on everyone around him. He was a well of knowledge who also embodied kindness and exemplified the achievements to strive for as an accomplished doctor. Rest well, Dr. Saperstein.

Our sages say there are three crowns.  The Crown of Torah; The crown of Priesthood, and the crown of Royalty.  But the crown of a good name exceeds them all.  "Blessed is the person who lives with a good name and departs this world with a good name.  A good name is to be treasured above precious oil."  Wealth, like health, may pass away but a good name can live forever.   It can adorn a person throughout life; It can be bequeathed as a precious inheritance; It confers honor on family and friends; It inspires and challenges those who carry on.  Therefore, the righteous need no monuments; Their good deeds are their memorials.   The earth of the grave does not cover them; The hand of time does not erase them.  The kindness they have shown, the love they have given, remain an everlasting remembrance.  Their achievements are more lasting than granite, their devotion is an enduring legacy.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news that my colleague Dr. Alan Saperstein had suddenly passed away.  I started working at Mapleton OPD in 1979 with Alan.  He was a wonderful, warm person who made you feel always comfortable around him. We shared many family stories , we both had elderly parents whom we cared for. Dr. Saperstein was a brilliant Psychiatrist with incredible empathy for the patients he cared for, from the young adult to the frail elderly.

 Dr. Saperstein had a unique way that he made every staff member regardless of their position feel part of the clinical team, he valued everyone's input in the care of the patient.  I have so many fond memories of him, wonderful sense of humor, kind, compassionate and dedicated his life to the less fortunate.  May he rest in Peace.

Dr. Saperstein was truly one of a kind.   He had a brilliant mind and whatever he lacked in organizational skills he made up for with warmth and generosity in spades.  He was one of the most genuinely kindhearted people I've ever met and I am so grateful to have crossed paths with him.   To say he will be greatly missed is an understatement of the highest caliber.

I felt like such a colorful character deserved some more color on his memorial.  I was a little short on photos of Dr. Sap in my collection, but I was able to grab some screen-caps from a colleague’s retirement video we made a few years ago.  I like to think of this as him waving and wishing us all well till we meet again.  Rest in peace our dear friend.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Alan's death. We worked together in the Mapleton Clinic's Day Hospital and later on the Mapleton
Midwood Mobile Geriatric Team. I was always impressed by Alan brilliance including his virtual total recall for all psychiatric and medical matters, and the kind unassuming way he inevitably
he gained his patient's trust and the team's respect. I valued the times we took walks, lunched together and collaborated on 
home visits to our frail elderly clients. I also benefitted from
Alan's legal expertise as when 'picking his brain' on legal matters
and when he represented me in a real estate transaction.
My condolences go out to his family and the Mapleton family.
May Alan's memory be for a blessing.

I met Dr. Saperstein 11years ago when I started to work on one of the inpatient units of South Beach Psychiatric Center. He was my colleague and a mentor.  He earned medical and law degree and yet always made you feel like there something he could learn from you. He taught me how to be compassionate, how to care about the patients. He was so kind, easy to approach with any request for help. He liked to make jokes and really enjoyed when people laughed together with him.  He always cared about his family and people around him. He was a truly special person and will be missed by all of us.

For the last three years the first person I sAw when I have walked in the entrance to our office was you. I often walked in on your usual morning check in  with your nephew. After asking “what’s doing?” with him you checked in on the rest of us. I truly appreciated how you always had patience in teaching me about clinical courses, mental statuses, diagnoses and medication. I truly leaned a lot from you. I also appreciated how you provided your insight on  my future career pathways and your ideas of the “politics” at South Beach and how to deal with it all. I appreciate how you shared your stories with me of your journey  with your parents, siblings, nephews and nieces.  I know there was some rocky roads. But you were an amazing uncle to your nephew and your great nieces. They are blessed to have you  been a presence in your life.  I enjoyed hearing  of all of your travels of you and your girlfriend. You   shared experiences of places I have never have 
even heard of. I am so glad you were able to experience true love in your life. I hope you are with all those who love you now and you are at 
peace.  We will see each other again and have much more to catch up on. Rest In Peace 

Dr. Saperstein was the very definition and embodiment of a dedicated, compassionate, and empathic doctor. In his long and distinguished career, he took excellent care of thousands of patients, giving the most vulnerable among us a renewed chance at a life worth living. He was also so kind to everyone he met, including all his colleagues. He will be deeply missed. May his family find comfort during their time of grief in the knowledge that Dr. Saperstein left this world a much better place for so many people. 

I had the pleasure of working with and getting to know Dr. Saperstein over the years. He was kind, respectful, and so very smart.  He was so knowledgeable and could discuss almost any topic. He also had a wonderful, quirky sense of humor that made us all laugh each day. I will miss our conversations and just seeing him at South Beach where he spent so many years helping to improve peoples' lives. I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.  

I'm so saddened by this news. I think I first met Alan in early 1978, a few months after I began working at South Beach Psychiatric Center. We worked together in the early 1980s at SBPC's Mapleton OPD when I was doing a social work school field placement there. We also worked together during my last 5 years at South Beach, on the hospital's forensic committee.  You don't have to be Jewish to know the Yiddish word "mensch." Alan was the embodiment of the word's meaning: a person of honor and dignity.  Dr. Saperstein was unsurpassed as a hard-working, caring, ethical and honorable individual. He will undoubtedly be missed by the many, many patients over the past 45 years for whom he provided outstanding and compassionate care, and by the many coworkers/colleagues who benefited from his strength and intelligence. Alan was an amazing team player, in a league of his own.

I ran a small group on the unit after they learned of Dr Saperstein's passing and you could see the sadness in some of their eyes but unable to verbalize their feelings. I shared with them the staff also felt sad and are in mourning.  I told them I will miss his baritone voice talking with his nephew and making plans for fun things to do or giving advice like a caring mentor.  I told them he always had a delightful sparkle in his eyes when we had sweets on the table brought in by colleagues.  One patient recalled that the last time she saw him he had three donuts in his hands.  With that comment, joy returned to her eyes--that he lived with appreciation for life.  We ended group by reminding ourselves that life is short and each moment can be a new chance for a meaningful interaction.  Alan lived his life with meaning and purpose. 

I first met Dr. Sapperstein when I was attending Aminoamides Hospital Day Treatment Center.  At first, he seemed to me not organized; in time i realized he was so empathic and concerned about everyone he treated.   I will miss him and feel bad I didn't get to know him better.

Dear family of Dr. Saperstein,
I remember the day when I first arrived to the clinic where Dr. Saperstein was working at that time.
He was very humble and super funny at the same time. Always smiling, kind and humble to the point that was very easy to forget what kind of extra ordinary person he was.  He was able to appreciate and enjoy every little thing that’s sometimes mostly only children are capable of.
Dr. Saperstein, thank you for giving us so many smiles and for being so caring.


Deepest condolences to the Saperstein family. He was a wonderful man who was respectful and polite to staff and treated clients with dignity and respect. It is a tremendous loss to the South Beach family. He will be remembered fondly.

Dr. Saperstein will be greatly missed. He devoted his professional life to public service and cared for a most vulnerable population.  He shared his life with those he worked along side of for 45 years Deepest condolences to the family and may you rest in eternal peace.

I worked with Dr. Saperstein at South Beach and I had such admiration and appreciation for him as a colleague and as a psychiatrist. He was great with both patients and with his coworkers. I'm so glad that I had the honor of working with him.

 I wish you, his loved ones, warm sympathy and that you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. May his memory and legacy be for a blessing.
