She was born April 23, 1933, the daughter of Morris and Bessie Manker and grew up in Chelsea, Massachusetts. After completing high school, she attended the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. In 1954, she married Dr. Nathaniel Cohen – a marriage that lasted 43 years until his death. Dr. Cohen was commissioned in the Navy, and early in their marriage they spent time in various West Coast ports. Upon his discharge, they returned to the East Coast, spending a year in New Haven before settling in the New York area for the remainder of their lives.
Eileen and Nat first lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and moved to Englewood, NJ in 1962. Between 1957 and 1963, Eileen gave birth to four children – Ira, Thomas, Sara and Sheila. When Sheila reached school age, Eileen returned to full time work, serving as the administrative assistant at the Englewood Middle School, where she was dearly loved by the faculty and students alike. During their time in Englewood, Eileen and Nat lead a very active social life that produced numerous long-lasting friendships. After all of the children had left home, Eileen and Nat moved to Fort Lee, NJ.
Eileen was a terrific friend, and energetic planner, a wonderful mother, and a supremely generous grandmother. Her intelligence and fierce competitive streak were on display anytime she sat down for a game of bridge or Scrabble. She also fully enjoyed all the wonders of Manhattan including museums, restaurants , and Broadway shows.
She was quite fortunate during the past two decades to have as a friend and companion, Alvin Fosner, a musician, teacher of music, and amazing story teller. The two lead a remarkably active life including many trips to California, D.C., and Albany to visit their families.
Eileen Cohen leaves behind an admirable legacy of generosity, kindness, and determination in the face of adversity. She will be greatly missed. Funeral Service Sunday April 2, 2017 11:30AM at Gutterman and Musicant . 402 Park St Hackensack, NJ
