Born in Brooklyn, NY to Fannie Gleit Greenberg and Murray Greenberg, Erwin was a New Yorker through and through. He grew up in Brooklyn, graduating from Samuel Tilden High School before proudly serving as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War, where he worked on the first mobile television system. Thanks to the GI Bill, he continued his education at Pratt Institute, earning a Bachelor of Engineering in 1950.
On March 16, 1951, Erwin married the love of his life, Hazel Levine. Together they built a beautiful life, raising three daughters—Alissa Pam, Darcy Jan, and Evan Leigh. They lived in Brooklyn until 1962, when they moved to Spring Valley, NY, eventually retiring to Park Ridge, NJ. Erwin and Hazel shared 74 wonderful years of marriage before Hazel’s passing in March 2025.
Erwin was the founder of Excello Electrical Construction & Maintenance Company, where he served as a licensed electrical contractor for an astounding 68 years—operating the business until the age of 90. His work helped illuminate the New York skyline, leaving a lasting legacy in the city he loved so dearly.
Family was the center of Erwin’s world. He cherished his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many pets who brought joy to his life. His warmth, strength, and steady presence were gifts to all who knew him.
Erwin was predeceased by his beloved wife Hazel, his parents Fannie and Murray, his daughter Darcy Heagy, his son-in-law Steven Milligram, and his brother-in-law Allan Gerard. He is survived by his daughters Alissa Bogorad (David Bogorad) and Evan Milligram; his sister Sheila Greenberg Tarter; his son-in-law David Heagy; his sister-in-law Ronnie Gerard; his grandchildren Arielle Bogorad (Lucas Pitz), Alexandra Coleman (Michael Coleman), Caitlin Anderson (Ryan Albano), and Kyle Smith (Maggie Lynn Smith); and his great-grandchildren Stella Pitz, Aiden Coleman, Zoey Coleman, Liam Albano, and Quinn Albano.
Erwin Greenberg’s remarkable life, defined by love, dedication, and resilience, will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.
