Flora Martha Weinberg (Shapiro) passed away peacefully on December 4th, 2025, age 97, in Topsfield, MA. A long-time resident of Bergenfield, NJ, Flora and her beloved husband Melvin had, in the past 6 years, moved to Massachusetts to live with their younger daughter Amy Weinberg in Merrimac MA.
Flora was born in Manhattan and raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, remaining a proud New Yorker to the last. A quiet and modest friend to all, she cloaked the spunk and talents which set an example for her daughters. In the eighth grade she submitted two poems to an all-NYC contest and won both the first and second prizes. She was a devoted fan of Eleanor Roosevelt, faithfully reading Roosevelt’s column My Day, passing on ER’s example to her family.
Flora graduated from Queens College in 1950 and retained a deep enthusiasm for art, her favorite subject, which she shared with her daughters. In later years Flora, Mel in tow, visited museums, ancient ruins and out-of-the-way eateries throughout Europe and the Middle East. Working at various offices over the years she made many friends, and in the afterhours she read ferociously.
Flora was predeceased by her beloved husband of almost 70 years, Melvin; her parents, Bernard and Rose Shapiro, her sister Doris and her husband Stan Herskowitz, sister-and-brother in-laws Pearl and Allan Weinberg, and Amy’s life partner Peter Bodge. She is survived by her daughters, Mimi and Amy; nieces and nephew Sue (Mike) Schneider, Marty Hershkowitz and Roberta Weiss (Sol Tezcan), grandniece Lindsey (Bret) Dobin; grand nephews Matt (Alyssa) Schneider and Mark (Sheryl) Schneider; great-grands Landon and Sophie Schneider, Brody Dobin and Summer Schneider; the Bodge- Napierala family: Trae, Chris and Sadie; cousins Marti, Julia (Heath Mort) and James Mirkin and Mark, Dan and Erica Botwinick.
May her memory be a blessing.
