

George was born in New York, NY, on July 3, 1923, to Gertrude and Leo Auerbach. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and Brooklyn College. He served in the infantry in WWII, which took him to France, Switzerland, and Germany, where he fought bravely, and was awarded the Bronze Star. When he returned from the war, he finished his degree at Brooklyn College serving as editor-in- chief of the college paper, The Vanguard.
He married his college sweetheart, Doris Newfield, in 1949. He worked as a writer and editor for the New York Times from 1947 through the early '60s, covering financial and business news. Following his career at The New York Times, George opened his own Public Relations firm where he handled financial PR for various companies. In 1955, he and his wife moved to Englewood, NJ, where he resided until his death. George was an avid stamp collector, bridge player, and traveler. He was President of the New York Financial Writers Association and on their Board until his retirement in 2014.
He is survived by his wife, daughters, Karen Levine of Chicago, Deborah Gespass of Pittsburgh, and four grandchildren, Julia Levine, Daniel, Sam, and Katy Gespass.
