Herbert L. Galant died peacefully at home on March 18. He was 97. Born and raised in the Bronx, he worked in the family’s appetizing stores before attending the University of Wisconsin and Harvard Law School, and then enlisting in the Air Force where he served as a First Lieutenant.
After returning to New York, Herb joined the law firm now called Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson where he became a partner and head of the firm’s Corporate Law Department, and retired as a Managing Partner. A specialist in Mergers & Acquisitions, he participated in some of the largest deals of the time. He was admired for his intelligence, integrity, and the respect that he showed for others.
Herb was married to his love and life partner Fern for 69 years. Together they enjoyed traveling the world, taking advantage of New York City and, most of all, spending time together as a family — especially at their house on Candlewood Lake. He was a revered advisor and mentor to many, and took greater pride in his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews than any of his professional accomplishments.
Herb is survived by his wife; son Peter and his wife Dorothy; son John and his wife Peggy; daughter Amy Warner and her husband Keith; and grandchildren Elizabeth, Michael and his wife Alex van den Heever, Kyle Winters, Wren Winters and their spouse Craig, and Pamela Jordan (PJ) Galant. His love and guidance will be deeply missed.
A Private family service will be held on Sunday 3/22. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
Those attending the service should meet 11am inside the rotunda located between the cemetery's office and the mausoleum.
The parking lot is to the is to the left of the cemetery's office.
