With great sadness, we announce the passing of our mother Hilda Katz Solworth on October 16, 2025, after living with advancing dementia for fifteen years. She reached her goal to live until the age of 100 and was only a few months short of her 101st birthday. Hilda is mourned by her daughter Kim Solworth Merlino, her son Jon Solworth, their spouses John Merlino and Deniz Solworth, grandson Gian Merlino and spouse Becky Rutherford, grandson Jacob Solworth, grandson Lee Merlino and spouse Mallory DeRoche; and great-grandson Isaac Rutherford Merlino. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband Lee Solworth and son Kerry Solworth.
Hilda was a “Jersey Girl,” born in Jersey City, raised in Caldwell, and lived from the time of her marriage in 1952 to the end of her life in Englewood. She attended Hood College in Frederick, MD and earned a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. After graduating, she taught Home Economics in public schools and worked in several New York City businesses. When her husband, who was Chief of Surgery at Englewood Hospital, died suddenly and left her with three young children, she pivoted from being a homemaker to learning the travel business and began working as a travel consultant. That work, which she continued past her 80th year, enabled her to travel all over the world and make many lifelong friends.
Hilda was known by her extended family and dear friends for her elegant fashion style and her fabulous from-scratch holiday meals that often culminated in an angel pie or cheesecake.
Donations may be made in Hilda’s memory to support the wonderfully caring hospice staff at Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Englewood.
