Johanna Idzenga Sturm, 69, passed away on November 27th. Johanna’s greatest single hallmark was her caring. She was a natural care-giver who would have made a great nurse. Among her professional engagements were desk-top publishing and the distribution of printed music, but her principal passion was looking after the needs of others.
Threading through the entirety of Johanna’s life was remembrance. “I remember,” she would say, and countless stories would surface: her early Cliffside Park childhood, the piano lessons given and taken, the “Dutchness” of her family. The volume and depth of her stories increased exponentially after the birth of her pride and joy, her beloved son Max, who became a catalyst for her volunteering—for soccer and Little League, for Temple participation, for library and school functions, and for mentoring many of Max’s growing circle of friends.
Civic contribution was also an important part of her activities. She got to know an astounding number of Englewood folks as a result of her working the polls at election time. So many voters commented on the kindness of the girl with the flaxen hair who knew her stuff and made the waiting in line less tedious.
She leaves behind her husband of 46 years, George, and her son Max and step-sons Peter and David and their families. And already, she is missed.
A service of remembrance will take place on Friday, December 2, 2022 at Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ.
