

CAIN (Loppie), Alvena – 75 Passed away peacefully at the QEII Health Science Centre on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Sydney and Ethel May ( Allison) Loppie. Alvena retired from the Halifax Regional School Board after 25+ years of service and was the pioneer behind the Four Plus Program that is implemented in our schools today. Alvena was also the Owner/Operator of Sweet Sisters and Larry Café. Alvena was an active member of Cornwallis Street Baptist Church and served on many committees graciously giving of her time, talent and treasure, including Cornwallis Street Baptist Church Explorers’, CGIT Choirs, Sunday School Teacher and Missionary, also Pre-school Teacher at Brunswick Street Church and active in Prison Ministries. Alvena had a lifelong dedication to community through her tireless volunteer commitments including, Halifax Regional Police Diversion and Citizen’s Patrol Committee’s, Central Halifax Seniors Recreation Committee, HRM Harbour Solutions Project, North-End Walkers, Carrot Co-op Committee and many more. Alvena is survived by her husband James. Sons Jason, Wayne and Sheldon Halifax. Daughters Donna, Linda (Elvis), Rosalyn (Buzzell), Mitzie Halifax, Starr (Maher) Sackville, Nadine (Roland) Dartmouth; eighteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren that she loved so much. Brothers, Charles (Joan), Leroy Halifax, James (Lydia) Toronto and brother in law Gerald. Sisters Rose, Halifax, Clara (Carl), Debra, Dartmouth, Mary and Marion, Toronto and Sister in Law Kathleen. Godchildren, Faith, Tina, Mary , Sandra and Robert. Alvena was predeceased by brothers George and Claude, sisters May, Helen, Grace, Esther, Winifred, Shirley and Barbara and Goddaughter Ethel. Visitation will be held on Thursday and Friday from 4-8 pm at Cruikshanks Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax with a Going Home Service to be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11am in Cornwallis Street Baptist Church; Rev.
