
HAUGHN, Annie Mary (Annie) (Nee Lorraine) 96 of Halifax passed away November 9, 2013 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Onslow, Colchester County, Annie was the daughter of the late Purley and Clara (Graham) Lorraine. She was predeceased by her husband Quentin A; five brothers: Hector, James, Laurie, Lloyd, and Edward Lorraine, all of Onslow; two sisters: Florence Johnston of Upper Stewiake and Leta Hill of Onslow. Surviving are sons: John Purley, Halifax, George Wentzel (Ljerka Kunst) of North Vancouver; daughter: Mary Anne of Halifax; grandchildren Heather and Hannah Haughn of North Vancouver; sister-in-law: Shirley Lorraine of Onslow; several nieces and nephews. Annie graduated from Colchester County Academy, Nova Scotia Normal College, with Superior First diploma, and Sucsess Business College, Truro. She attended Summer school at Dalhousie University. After teaching School for two years, she was then employed in the naval communications office HMC Dockyard, Halifax, until her marriage in 1951. As a teenager, faraway places kept calling Annie. During her first employment, she began preparing for her trips and has been successful in traveling to many locations on each continent. Other interests included helping others, gardening, embroidery, quilt making, bowling with “The Branches League,” and swimming at Dalplex.
Annie was a Charter Member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Dartmouth and always active in many volunteer organizations; for several years was a volunteer for the Halifax School for the Blind. For many years, she had been an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Halifax, and of the Laubach Literacy Programme, conducting workshops at various locations in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to train tutors to help the non-reader. Taking a further course to help “new Canadians” with English, she enjoyed meeting all nationalities. Annie was an honorary life member of the Alumni of Retired Communicators (ARC). For her years of years of volunteer work, Annie was publicly honored by the Halifax YWCA at a women’s recognition dinner and by the greater St. John Literacy Council, Saint John, N.B. Among her souvenirs, is a spoon engraved with three doves presented to her for years of involvement with the Lutheran Church Women’s group. Her body is resting at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Visitation will be Thursday, November 14, from 2-4 and 6-8. Funeral Service will be held at 11.00 am on Friday, November 15 at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Windsor Street, Halifax. Interment will be in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville.
