Don spent his formative years in Kingston, Ontario where his father was a well-known entrepreneur and city councilman. Don began his working life in banking, but his true love was the automobile business. He moved his young family to Halifax in 1967 when he purchased his first dealership. Over his many years in business he owned Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi (first in Canada), Ford, Subaru and Honda (first in Nova Scotia) franchises. He was best known for Colonial Honda in Halifax.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Nelles and Kathleen (Kay) Megaffin, and siblings Joan and John.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Margaret Patricia (Pat); his brother William (Francis) of Kingston, Ontario; and his children Michael (Darlene), of Tantallon; Steven, of Amsterdam, NL; Christopher (Virve) of Halifax, and Mary-Elizabeth, of South Surrey, BC. He had five grandchildren that he loved very much; Danielle, Jake, Tommy, Matthew, and Emma Ireland. He will be deeply missed.
He had a great life with a very good balance of hard work and recreation. He was an avid golfer, both in Halifax and in his second home in Venice, Florida. Don and Pat travelled everywhere in the world, often in countries that were not ready for tourists such as Istanbul (during a period of Martial Law), Burma, China, Russia, and the Middle East. His favorite cities were London, Rome, and Amsterdam.
Don was very friendly and was a true gentleman. Everyone who knew him loved him. He treated his clients, staff, and colleagues with respect and believed that building long-term relationships was the key to success.
The family would like to thank the staff of Parkland at the Gardens for their wonderful care in the past 30 months, especially in his last two weeks. We want to thank Anitha and Pamela who helped him daily over the past 5 months.
Don’s remains have been cremated and a memorial will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Don’s name to The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (www.alzheimer.ca) or Feed Nova Scotia (www.feednovascotia.ca).
