Died in Melville Gardens after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.
Dorothy was born in Toronto, the eldest daughter of Spencer and Norah (Moore) Ball. At the age of seven she moved with her family to Halifax. Dorothy was an amateur artist and took classes with Elizabeth Styring Nutt at the Nova Scotia College of Art. She worked as a reporter on the women’s page for the Halifax Chronicle in the 1940’s. Dorothy was a secretary at MT&T and later at CBC. In 1953 she travelled to London, England to work.
In 1954 Dorothy married Christopher Davis Cooper Smith (Kit) and they settled in Leeds, Yorkshire. They had two children, Nigel and Jennifer. Dorothy put her heart and soul into her life in England. Kit died in 1999.
Dorothy moved back to Halifax to be closer with family and friends. Soon after this move Colleen Wight came into her life and gave Dorothy much love and dedicated care for the remainder of her life. Many thanks to her sister, Margaret and her family for their care and support since Dorothy’s return to Halifax.
She leaves her two children Nigel and Jennifer and her grandchildren Joanna, Madelaine and Davis as well as her sisters Margaret Mussett and Eileen Stephenson (Vernon, BC).
Dorothy was a gentle soul and was loved by all who knew her.
The family would also like to thank the dedicated staff of Melville Gardens for their excellent care.
