Duncan Graham Dauphinee, 83, died peacefully on March 28, 2016 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, NS. Born on May 4, 1932 in Boutilier's Point, NS, he was the eldest son of Dorothy Jean (Awalt) and Oliver Graham Dauphinee.
Duncan is survived by the love of his life for sixty years, Shirley (nee Mason); daughters, Susan Bradley and Lisa Harvey; son, Andrew (Suzanne); and grandchildren, Alexander Hughes, Emma Hughes, Rory Hughes, Georgia Bradley, Lindsay Dauphinee, Jeffrey Dauphinee, Shannon Harvey and Mitchell Harvey.
Duncan is also survived by his sisters, Iris (Jack) Gillan and Marilyn (John) Kennedy and sister-in-law, Catherine Dauphinee. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Harley Dauphinee.
Duncan was stricken with Alzheimer’s Disease and was cared for by the staff at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Halifax over the past four years.
A consumate gentleman, Duncan was known for his warmth and thoughtful ways, ever helpful and concerned for the well being of others. He was charming and charismatic and made friends where ever he went, particularly because of his sense of humour which put everyone at ease within moments of meeting him. These attributes contributed greatly to his success in his sales career, much of which was spent in the seafood and food product industries, and later as a tax compliance officer with the Nova Scotia Tax Commission.
Duncan had a great zest for life. He liked to spend time back at the camp on Falls Lake, trout fishing and deer hunting. He played a number of sports, particularly baseball, hockey, golf and curling. He enjoyed his pilgrimages to see his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Red Sox play, and later, the Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays. He was a season’s ticket holder for the Nova Scotia Voyageurs for many years.
Duncan loved music. He had many albums and CDs, with his favourites being swing and big bands. His love of music led him to becoming a part-time disk jockey, playing music at weddings and then as Andy Duncan, a weekend radio personality at CHFX-FM where he kept countless fans entertained through the wee hours of the night, spinning tunes and making friends.
For Duncan, retirement meant time for more adventures in life, like travelling across Canada and throughout the eastern United States, ocean cruises, winters in Florida, and time spent with his grandchildren skating, swimming, fishing, and playing on the shore at Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS.
He was a tireless volunteer in his community, serving in his church, supporting the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia and lending a hand whenever a need arose, to family, friends and strangers alike.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street in Halifax, NS, with Rev. Cheryl Rafuse officiating.
A private burial will take place at a later date in the St. George’s Anglican Church cemetery, Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Duncan’s memory by making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
