Beloved husband and father Larry Anderson (Edward L.) passed away on May 16, 2024, with his wife and daughters at his side. He was 76 years old.
A native Californian, Larry grew up in Kensington. He was the third child of Edward and Evelyn (Laereman) Anderson. Larry spent some of his childhood in San Paulo, Brazil, where his father, a civil engineer, worked on a project for Kaiser.
Larry pursued many passions and occupations. In his youth he was a golfer, a target shooter, a sailor, and a rock climber. He loved the outdoors and was a life-long cross-country skier. At different times he was a cross-country ski instructor, a woodsman, and a builder. In the 1970s and 1980s he designed tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks for The North Face, Sierra Designs, and Caribou Mountaineering. He also worked in production and design for Patagonia.
Larry was an exceptionally creative and talented builder and designer his entire life. He had a unique ability to envision and then make into reality special places that reflected light and local materials. In the mountains and on the North Coast of California he designed and built four beautiful houses for himself and his wife Frances. He enjoyed being an entrepreneur and working for himself. Larry retired as the owner of Larry Anderson, Inc., a design/build firm in Soda Springs, California.
In retirement, he and Frances lived first in Anchor Bay, Mendocino County, California, and then in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Though not a rider himself, he was always a great supporter of Frances’ passion for horses.
Larry loved the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Northern California coast, wooden boats, building houses, big dogs, cooking great meals, solving design problems, good conversation and most of all, his family. Though not a rider himself, he was always a great supporter of Frances’ passion for horses.
He is survived by his beloved wife Frances of Halifax, Nova Scotia, his daughter Hilary and son-in-law Olaf of Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, and his daughter Marley of Nevada City, California.
His independence, intellect, reflections on life, sense of humor, and generosity of spirit delighted his friends and family. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial will be planned at a future time.
If you wish to remember Larry with a donation, he supported the work and mission of Feed Nova Scotia.
