Frances Jane Armstrong, of Halifax, died on May 26, 2025, at Parkstone Enhanced Care.
Fran was born on January 2, 1929, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, the daughter of William and Julia Alice Armstrong. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her sisters Veronica (Joseph) Richardson, Charlotte Armstrong, and Margaret (Herman) Gibson, as well as her nephew Ken Gibson and niece Marg Melanson.
Fran is survived by her nieces and their families: Jane (John) Greenlaw, Meriden, Connecticut; Mary (Dale) Greenlaw, St. Stephen, NB; Kate (Malcolm) Swinemer, Mount Uniacke, NS; and Diane Gibson, Meddybemps, Maine. She also leaves behind several generations of great-nieces and great-nephews.
After graduating from St. Stephen High School in 1947, Fran entered religious life for four years. In 1952, she attended business college, where she studied typing and stenography. She went on to work in various branches of the federal government, including positions in St. Stephen, Dorval, and St. Andrews, eventually retiring from her position in Halifax with Customs.
Fran loved television — everything from cartoons to soap operas — and had a fondness for treats like chips and chocolate. She loved to travel and continued annual trips to Boston for her dental appointments well into her mid-eighties. She was fiercely independent and proud of it.
Fran will be remembered for her generosity and could always be counted on to support her family — providing food, running errands, offering financial help whenever it was needed, and always giving change to the kids.
A resident of Halifax’s Clayton Park area for over 50 years, Fran moved to Parkstone four years ago as her dementia progressed. She was much loved by the staff and fellow residents on Sullivan’s Lane. The family wishes to thank the wonderful team at Parkstone for their care and kindness.
At Fran’s request, a private family funeral and burial will be held in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, in August. A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, June 8th, from 2–4 p.m., at Kate’s home (166 Douglaswood Dr., Mount Uniacke).
Donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Society, or charity of one’s choice.
