It is with great sadness that the family of Gary Edward Smith mourns his peaceful passing on April 12th, 2022, at the age of 76. He passed away at home surrounded by his loving family from a heart failure related illness. Born in Halifax on March 09, 1946, to Howard Smith and Eva (Rockola) Smith.
Gary was a talented photographer and an accomplished oil painting artist who lived throughout Nova Scotia his entire life. He began his photography career at a young age of 17 working for the Halifax Chronicle Herald and later Maritime Tel&Tel. He also freelanced many other commercial businesses like Woods Brother Ltd and Lawtons. His greatest pride was opening and operating Passport Photo Halifax Ltd. from 1985 until March 20, 2022. The business and his paintings stood as an artistic monument on Quinpool road alongside the Oxford Theatre for over 30 years, known amongst many Halifax residents. The photography business involved countless weddings, press releases, photo IDs, and his perfect passport photos. He loved to boast about the people he would meet and helping those who had rejected photos from his competitors.
Gary is survived by his wife of 34 years Laling Tom, their children Samantha Smith, Canberra, Australia, Tom Smith, Halifax, NS. His daughters Christine Taylor, Halifax, NS, Cathy Quentien (Marc Quentien), Victoria, BC, and their mother Karen Lyle. His grandchildren, Zachary Taylor, Vanessa Taylor, Michael Joyce, James Quentien, Maisie Quentien, and great granddaughter Gemma Levesque. Gary is also survived by his sister Darlene Hire (Ronnie Hire), Lower Sackville, NS, and many nieces and nephews. Gary was predeceased by parents Howard Hawkins Smith and Eva Jean Smith.
Gary would like to thank the Canadian Passport Office and all his loyal clients throughout the years for their support and trusting of his experience and expertise. We would like to thank all health care workers who have helped us care for Gary, especially a big thanks to his palliative care nurse Megan.
In keeping with Gary’s wishes, visitation will be between 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Saturday April 16th, 2022, at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, NS. There will no memorial service and the burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Flowers are welcome.
