Passed away peacefully on August 5, 2018 at the Abbie J. Lane Geriatric Unit in Halifax with his family nearby and tucked deep in his heart.
Born February 24,1935 in Brooklyn, New York, George proudly served in the United States Navy. It was during that time that the handsome young sailor met his bride Jeanie at a soda shop where the young people would go for malted milk shakes. Jeanie fell for the smooth dancing Elvis Presley look a like.
George loved many genres of music- classical, rock and roll, old time country and especially Blues. He first heard a young B.B. King play at a club in Memphis. Many years later George met Mr.King after a concert in Halifax and was able to get an original recording signed.
George respected and embraced nature and he instilled that in his children.He had an amazing gift for working the land and could truly talk to the animals. He loved to hunt in the Catskills, go for Sunday drives in the Florida Everglades or take day trips around the Cabot Trail. He enjoyed fishing any and everywhere.
George worked in construction with the Painters and Allied Trades Union. In 1972 when industry was booming in Cape Breton, George moved to Whycocomagh with his wife Jean and their four children . They made their home at the end of the Roseburn Road where he continued his career in the construction industry and operated a Christmas tree and wild blueberry farm. Katherine (Grandma) Nock and her family embraced George as family. She treated him like a son and he regarded her fondly as a second mother.
George was a hard-working, humble and honest man who preferred a simple lifestyle. He lived a life of service to others. He was a volunteer firefighter and ambulance attendant, involved in local politics and served on the school board.
In later years George and Jean lived in Halifax around the corner from their son and grandchildren.
He enjoyed his backyard garden and made the best fried zucchini flowers and crab apple jelly.
George leaves to mourn his loving wife Jeanie of 62years and their children; Doreen Mousek of Olds , Alberta, George Huyghue ( Sue) of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Christoper Huyghue ( Denise) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Laurie Ann Huyghue (Bernard) of Miami, Florida and 8 grandchildren Spencer and Hannah, Justin, Kyle and Alysha, and Mark, Brian and Rachel. George was pre-deceased by his parents Arthur Ashley Huyghue Jr. and Bernadette (Kern) Huyghue, and brother Arthur Ashley Huyghue III.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 30 at 11am from Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, 6351 North Street, Halifax. Interment will take place on Friday, August 31 at 3pm from Stewartdale Cemetery, Whycocomagh, NS.
