

DANKNER, Gordon, Halifax, 75, passed away on May 31, 2016 after a brief illness, with his heartbroken family at his side. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Gordon was born on September 19, 1940, the son of the late Philip and Elsie Dankner. After a lengthy career in the family grocery business, he enjoyed 25 years in the insurance business, working until the time of his death. He was also a beloved teacher at Shaar Shalom Synagogue Hebrew School for 34 years, guiding hundreds of children through their Jewish education. He was a member of the congregation for more than 50 years, and served as President for 2 years. Gordy was a graduate of Queen Elizabeth High School where he was a member of the 1958 Canadian Juvenile basketball championship team. His gentle and kind demeanor, in business and life, will be missed by his family and many, many friends and associates.
Gordon is survived by his adored and adoring wife of 54 years, Renee; his cherished children, Dena (Brian) Kingstone, Ottawa; Mitch (Sarita) Dankner, Guelph; Penny (Jeff) Harding, Halifax; and the grandchildren he loved so much, Hilary Hendin, Julia and Sarah Kingstone, Sophie and Sam Dankner, and Evan and Alex Harding. He’s also survived by his loving brother-in-law Alan Devlin (Noreene Decker), Toronto. Funeral will be held at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax on Thursday, June 2 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Shaar Shalom Cemetery, Connaught Avenue. Shiva will be observed at 19 Birkdale Crescent, Halifax following the burial and from 7-9 pm and continuing on Friday (2-4 pm), Sunday and Monday (2-4 pm, 7-9 pm).
