John had a busy family, volunteer and work life. He came to Halifax from Hamilton Ontario when he joined the Navy. After serving in the military he had a long successful career with the oil company Fina/Petro-Canada. His job in sales/marketing allowed him to travel the Maritimes and Quebec extensively. He served as President of the Nova Scotia Lacrosse Association and was part of Mission Staff for the Canada Winter Games in Lethbridge Alberta. John was on the 'Advance Team' that organized the Canadian leg of the Calgary Olympic Torch Run in 1988.
He was an incredible 'handyman' who was always puttering in his workshop. His skills in woodworking provided many wonderful pieces to family and friends.
Boating around the Bedford Basin and the Halifax Harbour with family was one of his biggest pleasures and created some interesting adventures.
There are no words to describe how much John will be missed by his wife Anna (Murphy), his children and step children, Lisa Abbott (Kirby Abbott) Pam Barr (Tony Joseph), Scott Barr, Tara Armstrong (Rob Hanna), Stephen Armstrong and Colin Armstrong (Kelly Murray). His grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss their papa and Helen Williamson and Raymond Barr will miss their brother.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of the QEII. As well, we would like to express special thanks to John and Anna’s wonderful friends and neighbours, the kind professional staff of the Heart Function Clinic at the QEII as well as Dr. Donald Fay.
At John's request he will be cremated, there will be no visitation or service. Memorial donations may be made to The Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation. To view or place an online condolence, please visit: www.cruikshankhalifaxfuneralhome.com
