John Anthony (Tony) Milledge, devoted son of John and Margie Milledge, passed away suddenly in Halifax on Sunday, February 27th. Born developmentally challenged in Halifax on August 29, 1952, Tony nevertheless made himself heard around a table of nine children, or in class at St. Francis, and went on to collect friends and brighten their days every day of his life. To the uninitiated, first impressions of Tony could be deceiving. Given even a brief encounter however, it became obvious that Tony came fully equipped with a generosity that could humble those of greater means, a comedic streak that was ready for prime time, a work ethic that left others in his dust, all topped off by a genuine kindness towards others, and a bravery worthy of a medal. During the 70’s Tony joined his brother, Kevin, in Vancouver and worked for several years in foodservice and parish maintenance. Tony moved to Toronto in the 80’s, where he worked in moving and storage and parish care. Then it was back to Halifax, where for many years he volunteered with Feed Nova Scotia, and Abbie Lane “Clothes City”. For over a decade Tony was an inseparable companion to, and had the most loyal support of his best friend, Chris Adams, of Halifax. Tony is also survived by his mother, Margaret “Margie” (Stanbury) Milledge, Halifax; sisters Suzanne Milledge (Jay Abbass), Halifax; Barbara Milledge (Cindy Sceviour), Ottawa; Mary Lynne (Hugh) MacKay, Dartmouth; Christine (David) Fingard, Milwaukee, WI; Judy (Bruce) Campbell, Fall River; and brothers Eric (Barbara Doyle), Princeton, NJ; Kevin (Heather Cole), Vancouver; nieces Sarah Lynne; Elizabeth; Angela; Jennifer; Christine; Kimberly; Stephanie; nephews Neil; Kevin; Michael Fingard; Michael Milledge; Danica; Tess; Haley; namesake Fr. Anthony Milledge SJ, Matigara, India; Uncle Frank, Vancouver; and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews, all of whom adored Tony. Pre-deceased by oldest brother Robert “Bob”, and his father, John R. Milledge. Loyal friend to all who knew him, story teller without peer, untiring volunteer worker, and rock of support to best friend Chris Adams, Tony has left us too early. Visitation will take place at Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home (formerly Snow’s), 2666 Windsor St, Friday 3 - 5 o’clock and 7 - 9 PM.
