

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Joyce Mary Urquhart, 81, of Halifax, on September 16, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary Site, QE11. Born on July 6, 1935, she was the eldest daughter of the late John and Caroline (Squires) Coleman and step-daughter of the late Patrick Berrigan. Joyce grew up in “Greenbank” Halifax and attended the St. Mary’s Girls School and Saint Pat’s high. She then worked at Maritime Tel and Tel on North Street, Halifax.
Joyce married Carl Urquhart and moved to Ottawa, Ontario, and raised her family of 5 loving children. She worked at Sears in Kitchener, Ontario for many years, and upon retirement in 1998, she was thrilled to move back to her native Halifax.
Joyce was the ultimate seamstress and loved making gifts for her family. She spent many hours knitting and sewing Christmas presents for her family and friends. Baking shortbread cookies to send to loved ones over the holidays always gave her great joy.
She loved a glass of wine, and a good meal shared with friends and family. And was often heard sharing stories about her many grandchildren and great-grand children who she loved dearly.
She will be deeply missed by children, Bruce (Caryn), Patricia and Shawn (Mary), 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters, Doris LeRue, Patsy Casey, Gert (Robert) LaFond, and brother, Bill Coleman.
She was predeceased by sons, Scott and Robert, and grandson, Scott Jr . As well as brothers, Ronald Coleman, Jack Coleman and George Coleman.
Joyce dealt with many hardships in her life but was always a fighter. She battled lymphoma over the last 2 ½ years with her three sisters providing unyielding love and support during this trying illness. The love of her family was significant in carrying her through her treatments.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Cruickshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Funeral service will be Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 11 am in Cruickshanks Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
