

WEGENER, Leila Marguerite — 87, of Halifax, passed away suddenly after a brief illness on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Kentville in 1923, Leila (or Lee) was a daughter of the late Joseph and Nora Lockhart, but primarily raised by Arthur and Jessie Jess of Port Williams. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle (Norm) Collins; treasured grandchildren, Katrina and Paul; sister-in-law, Blanche Jess, and a number of nieces and nephews. Leila was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Herman, and her brothers, Don (Kaye) Lockhart, Charles Lockhart, Lawrence (Blanche) Jess and Phillip (Flo) Jess and sister, Mary (Phillip) Durno. Lee spent her early years in her beloved Port Williams. She was immensely proud of her time as an educator, having taught school for many years first in a rural schoolhouse in the Valley and then various schools in Windsor, Ont. and Halifax. Leila was always delighted in the achievements and experiences of her family and grandchildren. Lee enjoyed her nearly two years as a resident of the Berkeley Gladstone, Halifax, after living on nearby Kaye Street for many years. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 27, at 1 p.m. followed immediately by a memorial service at 2 p.m. in Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home, 2032 Robie St., Halifax, Rev. Patricia Malin officiating.
