

Len was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, England to Frances Charles and Edith Mary Sweett on August 29th, 1933. He is survived by his loving wife Helen of 63 years and his sons David (Trina), Graham (Marilyn), Stephen and eight loving grandchildren (William, Erica, Martine, Matthew, Ben, Emma, Hannah, Alex), great grandson Bastian and sister Pam in England. He was predeceased by his oldest son Michael.
After elementary school Len received a scholarship to Ipswich School and then to Technical College and went on to work at Cliff Quay Generating Station. Subsequently he attended Imperial College, London University on a full scholarship, and after postgraduate studies was awarded a Masters in Electrical Engineering.
He was employed by the Central Electricity Generating Board prior to emigrating with his young family to Canada in 1969, where he joined the Planning Department of the Nova Scotia Power Commission. He retired in 1993 as Vice President of Customer Services and Energy Management. He was a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia.
Len was involved in many other pursuits. Outreach was his passion and through his long-time association with Rockingham United Church he became involved in projects like the Food Bank, Saint Andrew’s Sunday Suppers and collecting clothing and household items for Brunswick Street Mission. He was also Cub leader for 6 years.
Len was a Founding Member of the Discovery Centre, Science, Innovators in the Schools project, and with Helen worked weekly evening shifts at the Out of the Cold Shelter. Len was also on the Grant Selection Committee of the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council.
His hobbies were stamp collecting, model making, flower gardening, windsurfing, camping, handyman, travelling to the US, stage lighting when in university, and walking his Dalmatian Frankie.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4th at 3pm at Rockingham United Church, Halifax.
