January 13,1927 to February 25, 2026
It is with true sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Marie d’Eon. Our mother died peacefully in palliative care with family members beside her after a short illness.
Mom was born in Halifax but spent her early years in Burnt Hill, New Brunswick. Her grandmother Mary Smith raised her in Halifax after her mother died when she was 6 years old. They would take the tram to afternoon movies where they would pay for one movie and stay for two. These were the depression years followed by World War II. Mom once told us how she was delighted to receive an orange for Christmas.
Mom was independent from an early age supporting herself with several positions from factory work in Ganong Chocolates to telephone operator. During this time, she lived with her brother Jack Ross and his family and grew exceptionally close to her nieces and nephews. She also developed her fashion sense and would find money in her budget for small luxuries. Despite the hardships of the times, she reminisced often how exciting this time of her life was as she enjoyed Halifax city life after her early years in New Brunswick.
She married Douglas d’Eon in 1951 and they raised 5 children in Ketch Harbour. During her many years in Ketch Harbour her pastimes included bingo, bowling and taking us to Crystal Crescent Beach. Marie and Doug were active in members of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and they often helped the Priests and Nuns with running the Parish since they were their closest neighbours.
She was resourceful meeting the challenges of raising a family of 5 when Douglas was away serving in the Canadian Navy, especially during the early years of their marriage. When the children were older, she returned to work in retail most notably with Sears Canada. When she retired from Sears she volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Bank.
Marie was predeceased by her husband, parents, brothers Jack (Edna) Jim (Mikki),George (Myrna) and Philip J. (Amelia) sisters Ilene and Patricia Ross. She leaves behind daughters Deborah (Mike) Whynot, Carolyn (Glenn) Hirschfeld, Mary (Christopher) Hart, sons Ronald (Lorraine), Richard (Deborah) D’Eon and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her independence and fashion sense never left her; she was living independently at Melville Heights and dressed for Sunday brunch out the day before her illness. Her only concession to age was that her children knew to always have her purse handy. Marie would be comforted by the knowledge that this duty has been discharged.
The family would like to thank the paramedics, QE ll Emergency Room staff, VG Palliative Care, and the staff Melville Heights for their care and kindness.
The funeral will be June 16, 2026 at 11:00 am at Stella Maris on Purcells Cove Road.
