It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Genevieve (Molly) Alphonse, 89, announce her passing on Sept.29, 2015 at Melville Lodge Nursing Home, Halifax. Molly will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Joseph; son: John; sister: Doreen (Wally) Bzdell, Nanaimo, B.C.; brother: John (Lynne) Sydney, Nova Scotia; many nieces and nephews; her extended family and many friends. Born in Louisburg, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late John and Jane (Lathigee) Pope. At age 21 Molly visited Halifax for the first time and never left. As a young girl Molly loved ice skating, an activity she continued well into her adult years. For many years Molly worked at the Vogue Theatre and later at Reitmans in the Halifax Shopping Centre. Molly was a very outgoing, friendly and engaging lady who had many friends. She loved good music, conversation and had a ready sense of humour, and enjoyed travelling throughout her life, especially to her native Cape Breton Island. In her later years her favourite pastime was visiting with friends in the food court at the Halifax Shopping Centre. Visitation Thursday Oct 1, 2015 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 am Friday, October 2, 2015 at St. Agnes Church, Mumford Rd., with burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Molly was courageous throughout her eight year journey with dementia and very strong to the end of her life. Molly’s family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Melville Lodge Nursing Home for providing her compassion, kindness and respect throughout her illness, and the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia for their support. Thank you also to Phyllis MacAvoy for her support and companionship during Molly’s final days.
