UWINS, Olga — Age 88, of Halifax, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026.
Olga was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and was raised in Halifax by her late parents, Joseph Chaban and Catherine (Makowski).
She met the love of her life, Lawrence (Larry) Uwins, and together they shared 67 beautiful years of marriage. As a proud and devoted Navy wife, Olga embraced the adventures of the military life and side by side, she and Larry created a family and a life filled with unconditional love, travel, and companionship. They created many fun memories and treasured friendships through their time spent together playing in the WO & SGTS’ Windsor Mess dart league. Their partnership was one of deep love, adoration, and happiness.
Olga built a career as an underwriter in the insurance industry for 25 years. Beyond her professional life, she dedicated many meaningful years as a leader with Girl Guides of Canada and was actively involved in her local Trefoil Guild, Sea Gates.
Olga was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lawrence; her parents, Joseph and Catherine; and her brother, Walter Chaban.
She is survived by those who were the heart of her world; her daughter, Jennifer Broders (Basil); her son, Timothy Uwins; and her cherished grandchildren, Mystique Uwins, Luke Broders (Emily Chafe), and Jake Broders. She is also lovingly survived by her brother, Orest (Carolyn) Chaban, and several nieces and nephews.
Olga’s special love for her family and her animals was unwavering and boundless. Nothing brought her more happiness than time spent together, sharing laughter, memories, and the simple comfort of being in one another’s presence. In her earlier years, she also took joy and pride in driving her blue 1978 Trans Am around the north end.
Olga lived with grace and dignity, guided always by love, selflessness, quiet strength, and resilience. She had a generous heart and a spirit that left a lasting impression on all who knew her. A natural caregiver, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to the well-being of those she loved. Her kindness, compassion, and gentle presence reached farther than she could ever know.
A cremation has taken place, and a private ceremony will be held to honour the beautiful life she led.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family invites you to take a meaningful moment to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a treat with someone special and share the simple gift of togetherness, a tribute Olga herself always cherished.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the residents and staff of The Parkland, Clayton Park, for welcoming Olga with open arms and creating a home she truly loved and adored. Your warmth, kindness, and sense of community meant the world to her. We are also deeply thankful to the compassionate medical team, on unit 9A at the Victoria General Hospital for the attentive care and comfort provided. Your support will never be forgotten.
