Bob married Catherine O’Connor in 1965 and they soon took up residence in Armdale near Chocolate Lake. Their children Robert and Elizabeth grew up playing in the bog and on the lake throughout the seasons.
He enjoyed working in his gardens, and always maintained they had the best neighbours, whose families grew up together, became friends, held street parties and helped each other when needed. A special thanks to everyone on Alderwood and Birchwood.
Bob was born in Halifax August 7, 1940, the elder son of the late Francis Kilvert and Winnifred (Camp), of Halifax. He graduated from St Patrick’s High School, and received his BSc and BEd from St. Mary’s University. He was a continuous learner with great respect for the value of education, and used his early years taking summer courses to improve his knowledge and utilize it in the classroom.
He began his teaching career at St. Thomas Aquinas, teaching science and acting as guidance counsellor. He also taught at Rockingham Junior High before moving to Oxford School, where he served as vice-principal until he retired in 1994, ending his 30 plus years in teaching.
When he first started to work in the classroom he soon realized that he could toss the book aside and just listen and engage with the students directly and follow their interest and enthusiasm. This says a lot about the kind of teacher he was,.
Bob was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Catherine (O’Connor), his son Robert (Nadine), Vancouver, daughter Elizabeth (David), Ottawa. Their granddaughter Eve, Vancouver, was the light of their life. He had a lifetime of adventures and was very close to his brother Ken (Crystal), Halifax. We want to especially thank the O’Connor and Connolly clans for a lifetime of friendship, support, and love.
He had a great intellect, a fine mind, and was an excellent conversationalist. He was the one who never wanted to go to a party but was always the last one to leave.
With great thanks to all of the family, friends, and neighbours who provided support during this time.
A celebration of life will take place in the summer.
