Murrant, Robert Charles - 73 of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on the evening of April 1, 2021 at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow following a long and valiant battle with cancer.
A proud Capper, Robert was born May 14, 1947 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Son of Robert Kenneth Murrant and Mabel (Dickson) Murrant, he was the second youngest of five children. Robert was predeceased by his sister, Muriel and brother, Thomas “Tucker” Murrant.
Spending his teenage years in Halifax, Robert attended high school at Queen Elizabeth High and later graduated with a BA from Saint Mary’s University in 1968. He received his Bachelor of Laws LLB degree from Dalhousie Law School in 1971 and his Master of Laws LLM degree from the London School of Economics (LSE) in 1972. Robert was a very accomplished lawyer practicing civil litigation with specialties in media and entertainment law. He made his mark early in his career at the age of 24 being the youngest lawyer to ever appear in Canada’s High Court.
Robert was larger than life, a colourful character with a penchant for storytelling - forever entertaining. In his retirement, Robert penned a novel that he self-published showcasing his love for past time spent in New England entitled Moneymaker Lake. He was an intelligent man full of interesting theories and ideas on topics from politics to climate change. Between the dash, Robert loved to sail and often took part in the Marblehead and Chester Race Week. He was also an avid hockey fan and played hockey much
of his life.
Robert spent the last few years with his longtime partner, Kimberley Anne Shelley, in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his two daughters, Chimène and Charlotte (Cadie) Jewer, and two grandsons, Quinn and Eamon Holt.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Cruickshank’s Funeral Home, Halifax,Nova Scotia. A funeral service will be held at the Regal Road United Baptist Church, 6 Regal Road, Dartmouth NS at 6pm on Tuesday, April 13th officiated by Reverend Dr. Frank Guinta, Jr. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
