Roselle Green

GREEN, Roselle, Halifax, in her 98th year, died peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre after a month-long illness. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1928, she was the daughter of Esther and Esar Katz, Jewish immigrants from what was then Russia.

A brilliant student, she was one of two women admitted to Dalhousie Law School in 1947 but left after her first year to marry a young surgeon in training, Dr. Saul Green, the love of her life. They were married for almost 57 years until Saul’s passing in 2005. While raising a family of four children, Roselle continued her university studies, completing a master’s in Canadian history, and diplomas in journalism and public administration at Dalhousie and the University of King’s College where some fifty years later she received an honorary doctorate, one of the many honours bestowed upon her for her good works.

Roselle built a successful professional career in public relations, first at Dalhousie, then with her own consulting practice. A lifelong learner, she took university courses into her 90’s and until recently, took weekly violin lessons playing the instrument she’d learned on as a child in the 1930s, taking the train by herself to Saskatoon each week for her lesson.

A swimmer and a bridge player, she was a loyal friend and stalwart contributor to the Halifax community as well as to causes far and wide. Above all, she was a loving spouse, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and mother-in-law.

Roselle is survived by her daughter Marcia Aronson (Steve) of Ottawa, son Howard (Lynne) of Toronto and son Morris of Halifax.

She was predeceased by her husband Saul and daughter Susan Goodman (Gerry) of Toronto, her parents and four siblings, Max, Alex, Brina and Morris.

Roselle is also survived by her grandchildren Michael (Dawn) and Rachel (Rick), great-grandchildren Julian and Myka as well as being a loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 6 at 1 pm at Shaar Shalom Synagogue where she was a proud charter member, 1981 Oxford Street in Halifax.

The family would like to send heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at Parkland at the Gardens, paramedics, and hospital staff who looked after Roselle in her final days.
