We are sad to announce the death of Ruth “Franna” Allen, but are comforted to share that her last days were on her own terms and surrounded by family -- just how she lived her life. She died August 3rd in her own home.
Ruth looked back fondly on a childhood in Meagher’s Grant with her sisters, spending the warmer months outdoors, and evenings and cold days playing cards to the sounds of CBC Radio.
She spent decades working in the Physics Department Office at Dalhousie University where she forged many lasting friendships. She also had a keen love for politics and social justice, and to the end of her days enjoyed nothing more than a good debate.
Ruth wanted to express her gratitude for everyone who came into her life through work, family, and friends, who provided so much joy and love. Anyone who was fortunate enough to meet “Franna” -- likely over a meal, a glass of wine, or a cup of coffee-- knows that love was returned tenfold.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 58 years Cameron Allen, Halifax; the “nearest thing to a brother”, Robert McCabe, Meagher’s Grant; her children Jennifer (Douglas Barron), Halifax; Jane (Rochelle Owen), Halifax; Andrew, Pickering ON; Ian (Jennifer), Souris PE; grandchildren Sophie, Eloise, Grant, Lily, and Olivia. She was predeceased by her father Guy Dickie and mother Evelyn (Grant) Dickie, and her sisters Phyllis Dickie, Patricia McCabe and Marie Dickie, all of Meagher’s Grant.
Ruth wanted us to share a message to those who want to remember her. “Do something to make our little piece of the world more beautiful: write a song, plant a shrub, paint a picture.” She suggested anyone who prefers should make a donation to any charity. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. To view or send a condolence to the family please visit: www.cruikshankhalifaxfuneralhome.com
