Clahane, Vernon, F “Vern”, born in 1934 in Halifax, passed away peacefully at home on October 5, 2011. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his loving wife Tove (Hellom) who has been by his side during his illness. Vern had been married to Tove for 53 years, they were childhood sweethearts. For the past 33 years they spent a great deal of time at their summer cottage where Vern enjoyed his passion for sailing. Since retirement they travelled across Canada from coast to coast in their motor home, always accompanied by their dog Metchin. In his spare time Vern enjoyed writing short stories and building model sailing schooners. He was instrumental in organizing a street party known as “Revelry on Retreat” which has continued for 35 years. Vern possessed a wonderful unique sense of humour that stayed with him, he had a way of making everyone smile. Sincere thanks to our many friends, some who took the time to travel in order to sit by his side and also the wonderful support from our neighbours. Tove wishes to thank our family physician Dr. Graeme Bethune, who has been a great support for many years. Also special thanks to Tammy Ewing owner of “Tammy’s In-Home Care” who bestowed such love, kindness and compassion during this difficult time. I would also like to acknowledge Dr. Robert Horton and members of the Palliative Care Unit who were so kind and helpful, and the marvelous VON nurses for helping make his last days so much easier. Memorial donations may be made to the IWK Hospital or any charity of your choice. Friends and neighbours are invited to celebrate Vern’s life at our home on Sunday October 23, 2011 between 2 and 6pm.
