It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald “Jerry” Stanley Reid, 82, of West Chester, Ohio on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 5:30am. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and a super involved grandfather. He deeply believed in the inherent goodness of all people and devoted his life to uplifting others, especially those whose voices too often went unheard. His unwavering compassion and tireless efforts brought hope and dignity to countless communities.
Jerry was born December 5, 1942 in Cass City Michigan to the late Ina Gertrude Evans and William James Reid. He is survived by his wife Deanna Easterling Reid, whom he married on August 14, 1965 (59 years); three children, Kristina Brown of Fairfield Township, Ohio, Greg (Susan) Reid of New Richmond, Ohio, Brad (Nicci) Reid of Hamilton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Logan (Julianne) Brown of Denver, Colorado, Dillon Brown of West Chester, Ohio, Jonah Reid and Gracie Reid of New Richmond, Ohio. He is also survived by his sister, Marion Adams and nephew, Timothy Adams of Caro, Michigan.
His professional career began in 1968 at the University of Cincinnati where he taught in four different UC colleges. He held numerous positions including Department Coordinator, Assistant Dean, Academic Director, and Director of Undergraduate Studies. He also moonlighted in several capacities counseling for alcohol and drug addiction, family counseling and the like. In all these different roles, there was one theme – help others to achieve their highest potential. To most, Jerry was a compassionate listener, a trusted source of wisdom, and a 'get you back on track' kind of guy when you needed it most. His family and friends would tell you that not much surprised him, and you always knew he wasn’t going to judge. He would only support you and offer alternative solutions – that was his superpower.
On a more personal level, Jerry had a long list of hobbies that usually included his loved ones. He had a deep passion for gardening, often growing so many vegetables that his wife, Deanna, could not preserve them fast enough. He deeply enjoyed fishing, going to the movies (mostly for the popcorn), and anything involving his grandchildren. He could be found attending events where his grandchildren were riding horses, competing in sports, or performing music and often enjoyed playing video games with them. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention his most trusted companion and loyal friend, Barney, his rescue dog. Though often unfocused and driven by food, Barney brought Jerry a sense of purpose, especially on the toughest days.
As we say our goodbyes, we want to remember Jerry for the unconditional love that he had for his cherished family and friends, the importance of equality and speaking up against injustice of any kind, and the gentle and supportive advocate that he was in so many of our lives. He would want you to know he lived a full life, so don’t waste your time grieving—he’ll see us all on the other side!
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 2, 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am with service to follow at West Chester Presbyterian Church @ 8930 Cincinnati Dayton Rd, West Chester Township, Ohio 45069.
