Remembering Anna Berestecki: A Tribute to Oma

Anna Berestecki, lovingly known as Oma, graced our lives with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love. 

My high school memories often shimmer in nostalgia.  When Ted and I went to Delta highschool together and were going steady, we would go every lunch hour home to Oma’s. Even after Ted had graduated, I would go every day to Oma’s for lunch. 

Oma’s home was a sanctuary, a place where the aroma of homemade meals welcomed me, and her kindness enveloped me like a cozy blanket. 

Her hot lunches, crafted with care, were more than sustenance, they were loved served on a plate.  Even when I sat alone, I felt her presence, her quiet encouragement.  In those moments, Oma wasn’t just Ted’s mother, she was mine as well.

Fast-forward to the next chapter: school lunches for our children. 
Oma’s thoughtfulness knew no bounds. Oma’s Sandwiches became legendary. 

Each week she’d assemble those sandwiches – layers of love and it never failed that when our kids would open their lunchboxes, and there they’d find Oma’s creations – their favourites, their comfort.

When we lived in Binbrook, our acre of land, became a canvas for Oma and Opa.  Together, they staked out plots, turned soil, and nurtured life.

In the garden, Oma’s hands worked magic. Tomatoes, peppers, and leafy greens flourished under her care. She knew the language of plants – their whispers of growth and resilience.

And as we harvested the fruits of her labour, we tasted not just vegetables but also the love that had been sown into every seed.

Grandmother to Sheryl & Joel (Elizabeth). Great-grandmother to Chelsey (Mike), Meghan (Jordan), Evan and Julia. Great-great-grandmother to Alexander.
