I think in 1974. He was a very caring man. He came to see me after my surgery.

 So sorry for your loss.  I recall that your amazing husband won a bravery medal for saving a man who’d fallen down into a crevice. 
I want to thank you for being one of the original founding members of 25 Toronto Medical Company, which is now 25 Field Ambulance. I joined as a private and commanded the unit from 1989-1992. 
I have fond memories of that time serving with you, LCol Derek Abbott, SgtMajor Tony Babineau, MCpl McBurney and 2 others, that sadly, I cannot recall.

It’s only now that I have read of Dr Butson’s passing.  Although it was years ago, my memories of him are still vivid and bring a smile to my face.  Whether helping with the hay or taking care of “Banny” I always enjoyed living on the farm in Ancaster.   Although I never met Sarah, I have often wondered if Caroline continued with her dance and if Richard ever did come to enjoy being on the farm.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all. My sincere condolences on the passing of Colonel Butson.   I wish I could say I knew him well, but sadly I had only a passing acquaintance with him.  We met several times in the 1970s through the RHLI, and always found him a friendly and a very genuine man.  What a life he had!

On behalf of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine, please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of Dr. Butson. He was an amazing man and will definitely be missed by our medical community.

It was with great sadness that I heard of Dick's passing.  A very brave, talented and charming man, whom I feel privileged to have met - the world is a poorer place for his absence. My heartfelt condolences, on behalf of all ranks of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment).  I remember seeing Colonel Butson at many RHLI Associate Officers' Dinners when I was a junior officer; I'm sure you will have many fond memories of him, as will the Rileys.

I meet Dr. Butson through our galloway cattle, reading his obituary tells me I never knew even a small part of this great man. Condolences to all his family and thinking of him whenever I see a "Belty"

We have wonderful memories of this super human being..... Kind, humble, generous and so well informed.  Sharing his abilities and humanity to all that came into his life, no matter in what accord, as a companion, comrade, a patient or a friend or acquaintance.

Sad to hear that this very good friend of the DMA and of the canadian military medical services has passed away. I am sure that all the former members of DMA share this feeling.  I got to know Col Butson when I was with the Defence Medical Association and when he and his beautiful wife Eileen attended the different Annual Meetings here and there across Canada.  It was always a pleasure to meet both as they were true and faithful supporters.  Wish I could be there next week but am outside the country.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.  All the very best to you Eileen and to the family.

My thoughts and deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family as you struggle with the sadness at the death of your beloved Dick. You have fought the good fight with enormous fortitude, courage and devotion through a long and devastating illness. At last my poor friend and your wonderfull husband has found well deserved peace. 

Throughout my time at St. Joe's Dick and I worked as a team and shared clerks and residents. We had many happy times as well as difficult ones but always worked well together. Dick was a wonderful, loyal and true friend. It was a great sadness to see the tragedy of his final years of illness and incapacity which he bore with great fortitude and courage. He never complained. Eileen you were always there for him and your devotion and love made his final days bearable. 

We all have great memories of Dick in his many roles, which he fulfilled with enthusiasm and pleasure - from farming and caring for his loved Belted Galloways, teaching the young the art and science of surgery to living a full and exciting life. He was a great friend an enthusiast in everything he did and undertook. He will always be and fill a major part of our life in Hamilton with his happy smile, his joy in all things and always being there. I will deeply miss him and am relieved his suffering has ended. All of us will ever recall memories that will keep his memory ever young and fresh.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I revisited his Wikipedia page when I got the news. He was a pretty outstanding and accomplished man. He lived a helluva life. Know I'm thinking of you and Al and your Mom and wishing I could make things easier by just letting you know you're in my thoughts.

We are saddened by your news of your dad's passing but rejoice in the knowledge of his amazing achievements during a long and productive life. He taught me so much surgery when I was a young medical student and both Catherine and I enjoyed a lifelong friendship for the rest of our lives. He was also responsible for me rejoining the army which became one of the most enjoyable periods of  our lives. It was sad to see him in poor health in the recent past and are pleased he has been relieved by a passage to a better place.

It is with sadness that I learned today of the passing of your father.  I last had the chance to speak to him at the Dieppe Memorial Service last August 19.  He gave me my medical when I joined the RHLI in 1966.  I am in Florida and will not be back in time to do the service.  Please pass on my condolences and regrets to Eileen and your family.

In a sense, we owe so very much to our parents. Their loss, their lives, the memories they gave us, will claim a very special blessing in our own hearts as the path we continue to tread moves quietly onward to whatever might still lie before us: Perhaps it is their children and grandchildren who will become their best epitaph...and what a proud responsibility that places upon our shoulders

Dick and I shared a response to a couple of ethical challenges during the course of our friendship and I rejoice that Dick's transparent integrity and respect for others served as a beacon and an encouragement when things were not going according to plan. He was a good friend to count on in a tight spot and was much appreciated for his straightforward demeanour and kindness by my late wife when Dick stayed with us many years ago.

Dick and I had first met in the mid seventies, drawn initially by our mutual medical advisory work with the Order of St John. It was a contact which quickly became a friendship as we shared wild stories of our exploits in polar climes, Dick from the Antarctic and me from the Arctic. Thus it was that I first learned of Dick's frankly heroic action which led to the award of the George Cross. Didy Grahame, Secretary of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association in London reflects that a disproportionate number of VC and GC holders are the older brother in a large family, or the supportive son of a widowed mother, or had other early life experiences which have given them  a heart and habit of solicitude. This is the Dick I shall remember and I thank your dear mother, Eileen and yourself, Rick, for the privilege of having been a guest in your home.

May I wish you Bon Courage for the days ahead, and Bon Voyage for the times ahead.

Just read about the passing of your father. Hoping you are are faring well and wishing for a time of peace for you and your family.

Dr. Butson removed two tumors from behind my left ear when I was seventeen years old. I have almost no scar and was told by the nursing staff that this would be due to his care and compassion. He did this surgery in a different way which took much longer but left me with almost no scar. I was a very frightened girl with very little self confidence and he made me feel worthwhile. Fourty years ago I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Butson to  make arrangements for surgery on myself. To this day I would let people know just how wonderful the surgery went and how kind Dr. Butson was to me. I will never forget him. Rest in Peace Doctor.

I want to express my thoughts about my honored father-in-law Dick Butson.  I knew him as a very kind man who had a lot of respect for people regardless of race and culture.  I have memories of him that I will treasure forever.  In my view, he was a gentle warrior in everything he did, and for everyone he touched.  His bravery would win him many feathers in my culture. Rescuing and serving others ran deep in my father's bones. When I was four, he saved me from drowning at Emerald Lake, then spent years gently encouraging me to swim again.  When I was eight, he swam beside me to the raft at Copetown Lake, and said as I dog-paddled, "Come on Sarah, you can do it."  And I did.  He sat me back in the saddle every time I fell off, and ran on the inside of the track field as I compete4d in high school.  "Come on, have faith, you can do it," was his mantra.  I did and we all did.  Dad gave us all the encouragement to have faith, strive to be the best we could be, and dig deep, real deep.  That was the gift he had.  Dad didn't have to lecture.  He practiced equanimity and humility and led by example no matter what the playing field: academics, artistic expression, respect for nature and the outdoors, travel and adventures galore.  He was my hero and mentor and the man against whom all others have been measured.  A tough act to follow Dad!  May you be resting easy knowing that our lives have been so profoundly enriched because of your's. Happy hiking trails to you until we meet again in the great mystery.  I love you forever.  Your daughter, Sarah.

It was a genuine pleasure knowing Col. Butson. Not only was he a loyal and committed member of the RHLI Senate but he was also a very familiar face in the Officers Mess. As Canadians we owe Col. Butson a great debt for his exemplary service and duty to the Canadian Armed Forces. He was one of the brave and courageous ones who knew no bounds. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

As members of the St. George's Benevolent Society, we had the pleasure of enjoying dinner with Dr. Butson and Eileen on a number of occasions.  It always included an interesting conversation.  Please accept our sincere condolences.

Caroline:  I never met your father but he was an extraordinary man by all accounts.  I am truly sorry that he has passed away.

Colonel Butson was an inspiration to a generation of soldiers. He passed the military parachutist course - very tough - at age 50 and did so much more. He rescued an American explorer in the Antarctic in 1949, hanging off a single rope deep in a crevasse to free the American and then treat him (he was awarded his George Cross, equal to the VC, for this. Just an amazing man, a personal friend, and a hero (although he'd deny it). He will be missed.

Dr. Butson endeared himself to many of us at ComForCare over the past few years. He will be missed.

My grandpa was a rare man. His life was full of vibrant characters and stories that fascinated me as a child and to this day. Every time I would see him he would indulge me with one of these stories. Whether it was his childhood in Hankou, or his family's escape from China during the revolution; his heroic and often hilarious adventures while exploring the Antarctic; tales of meetings with the Royal family; or stories of my Mom (Sarah) and Aunt (Caroline) as young girls - I was always captivated by his memories. It is difficult to fully comprehend what an accomplished and brilliant person he was, but his ability to excel in anything from surgery to mountaineering to the breeding of cattle is testimony to some of those accomplishments. However, apart from all of these very impressive feats, I will remember my  Grandpa from my own precious memories of our time together over the years. I will remember hiking with him around Banff, cross-country skiing in Kananaskis, canoe trips in Algonquin Park; I will remember Christmas and summer visits, I will remember his humour and wit, his generosity, his support, and his encouragement towards me to pursue a life that would leave a legacy, as he has done. I am so deeply grateful that I was able to visit him and hold his hand one last time before he passed. I love you Grandpa, and I hope you're riding swiftly by dogsled across an ice field, wind whipping at your smiling face, somewhere in the afterlife. Rest easy. Until we meet again. Xoxo - Hannah
