Don’s parents, Urram and Charles Gater immigrated from England and settled on Adeline Avenue in Hamilton. Don, their first-born, arrived on September 10, 1931, followed by brother Derek (Sylvia), sister Sylvia (Phil), and predeceased brother Grant (Lou). Don later married the girl next door -- his lifelong sweetheart, Georgina (née Houle) in 1953. Don worked at the Central Post Office and the Hamilton Spectator, often taking on side jobs to support his growing family. The hard-working, ambitious couple welcomed their first child in 1954, and then four more in the years that followed. As a couple, Don and Georgina were inseparable. Married for 71 years, they enjoyed square dancing and traveling the world and Canada from coast to coast. Don also loved golf, gardening, fishing, stained glass work and Uncle Milt’s Manhattens.
Don is survived by his beloved wife who lovingly cared for him during his last years. He is also survived by their children, Wendy (Steve) Burkholder, Cindy (Sharon) Williams, Wayne (Jane) Gater, and Sandy (Dean) Holden, 9 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren, and predeceased by infant daughter Luanne and son Randal.A wonderful dad and a beloved brother, uncle and grandfather, Don will be greatly missed by his family and a wide circle of friends. The family cordially invites all who knew and loved Don to a celebration of his life at the Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Avenue E, Hamilton on Friday, January 10th from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
