She was the eighth of eleven children born in Montreal to Mykola and Frania Jurychuk, who were one of the original founding families of St. Sophie Ukrainian Orthodox Church Cathedral, March of 1925 in Montreal.
Doreen moved from Montreal in the 1960’s, first to Toronto, working for the Toronto Star. Finally settling in the Hamilton area, working for the City of Hamilton. She was a member of the St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.
Doreen was “Chochia” to dozens of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and a wonderful Godmother to many others. She was a devoted family member always present to cheer (and drive in her white mustang!) family at their various sports activities and church functions. Whether rain or shine, she never missed an opportunity to travel to visit, and support loved ones. Proudly following her favourite sports team from a distance – Montreal’s Expos, and Canadiens, and a fan of the local Hamilton Tiger Cats, and the Toronto Blue Jays.
She had a passion for writing and treasured the art of communication. Her handwritten letters were a constant source of comfort, support and love. Every note she sent carried with it a piece of her heart, and they will forever be cherished by all who received them.
Above all, Doreen was known for her love of giving hugs. Her embrace was always a safe place, offering reassurance and warmth. Her hugs will be remembered fondly by those whose lives she touched.
Doreen was predeceased by her loving siblings, Helen (Walter), Mary (Andrew), Morris (Doris), Manny (Vera), Willie (Olga), Eugene, Sylvia and John, as well as sister-in-law Margaret Jury and brother-in-law Boris Avdimiretz. She is survived by her sister, Irene Avdimiretz, brother Ronnie Jury, sister-in law Diana Jurychuk and brother-in-law Roman Medynski. The family are grateful to Dr. Chen and the staff at Idlewyld Manor for the care and support over the years.
