She was born in the quiet town of Freelton, Ontario, to the late Mr. Lloyd and Mrs. Doris Cummins. During two summers, Dorie volunteered at a camp for the blind, where she taught swimming and gently encouraged students to build confidence in the water. After graduating from high school, she began a successful career at The Hamilton Spectator, where she was well liked and formed many lasting friendships, including a lifelong bond with her dear friend Helen Needham that lasted for over 60 years.
Dorie later moved to Mexico, where she spent several years studying art and language. Living within an artistic community, she developed her own painting style and fully embraced her identity as an artist. Upon returning to Canada, she worked with the Board of Education in Toronto and Hamilton, teaching English (ESL) to newly immigrated Canadians. She loved her students, and teaching gave her so much pride.
Dorie and her husband later made their home in Hamilton, where her two children were raised. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Christopher, and her daughter, Jennifer; her daughter-in-law, Carmen; her cherished grandsons, Nolan and Logan; her sisters, Audrey, and Joyce and her brother, Wayne.
Dorie was one of the kindest people one could know. She had a deep and lifelong love of animals and was blessed to share her life with many, all of whom she now joins again in heaven. Her gentle manner and warm smile drew people to her wherever she went, and she was fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed, yet never forgotten, and will forever be held in our hearts.
No services will be held at this time. A memorial gathering to take place at a later date. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers.
