

After a long battle with cancer, Gregory Matsis, passed away peacefully, on August 8, 2011, at the Juravinski Hospital, Hamilton, in his 84th year. He will be deeply missed by his wife Maria, his son George Matsis (Alina), his daughter Rena Matsis, his cherished grandchildren Greg, Andrew and Marcus and his brother Petros. Gregory will also be deeply missed by extended family and friends located in Canada, Greece, USA and Brazil. Gregory is preceded in death by his parents Vasili and Irini Matsis and brothers Spiros, Sotiris and George. Gregory was a hard-working, considerate family man who was well-liked. He was born on November 8, 1927 in Tsamandas, Greece. At the age of 16, Gregory joined EAM-ELAS (the main movement of the Greek Resistance during the Axis occupation of Greece during World War II) and served for 2 years (1943-1945), in fighting the invaders for the liberation of his country. The family wishes to thank Dr. DiPaolo, the staff at Community Care Access Centre, Bayshore Nursing and the Juravinski Hospital for their wonderful care. Visitation will be held at the CRESMOUNT FUNERAL HOME, 322 Fennell Ave. East. on Thursday, August 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be offered at the Panagia - Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 233 East 15th St., Hamilton, on Friday, August 12 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Mount Hamilton Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
