Passed away Friday, September 16, in her 84th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband Eldon of 54 years. Loving mother of Nancy, Tom and his wife Cathy, and Bob. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Matt, Joel, Rob, Elyse and Olivia. She is predeceased by her parents William and Jenny Radd. Helen was born and raised in Hamilton. After graduating high school, her first job, at 16, was at the Hamilton Stock Exchange where she reported stock prices with chalk on a presentation-style blackboard, and when stock-price changes had to be calculated in your head on-the-fly. Mom was a smart cookie and she used her smarts to catch the eye of a young man who had arrived in Hamilton from Chipman N.B. after proudly serving his country in WWII. She met Eldon while living on Gertrude Street when he was starting his job at Stelco. They married in 1950 and later settled on the East Mountain on Toby Crescent to raise their family. Mom was a homemaker, always proud of her garden, known for her cooking and baking, no one ever left the house without a plate of “goodies”. To this day, no one has matched her cabbage rolls or famous lemon cookies. Mom worked at the Henderson Hospital as the “TV lady” and then later on at Sears. Helen and Eldon lived their twilight years at St. Elizabeth’s Village on the West Mountain with their dog Sam and many wonderful neighbours. She missed Eldon terribly since his passing in 2005. Her family was so very proud of her and will miss her terribly. Helen and Eldon loved to go to dances on Friday nights when they first met; so it is fitting she passed on a Friday evening, Eldon was waiting for her; they are now dancing together in heaven. God Bless them both. Thank you to all the caring medical and support teams at Shalom Village Long Term Care Suites and to all of her friends, who visited, called and sent along cards. Mom loved every one of them. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will follow at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel United Church, Upper Ottawa Street in Hamilton Ontario or to the Parkinson Foundation.
