Jack was predeceased by his first wife and childhood sweetheart Ruth Page. He is survived by his second wife (and to his pride, only his second girlfriend) Sharon Campbell and their furry companion Duffy. Proud and dearly loved father of Kelly Liddell (John), Mike Springstead (Linda), Mark Springstead and Steve Springstead (Jennifer). Devoted and fun-loving grandfather to Mark Liddell, Ryan Liddell (Alexis), Lesleigh Irvine (Ryan), Brennan Roth, Christopher Springstead, Andrew Springstead, Steven Springstead, Kevin Springstead, Adam Springstead, Sean Springstead and Jake Springstead. Great grandfather to Emileigh, Lindie, Lexie, Allie, Vann, Emmett, Kylana, Owen and Zoe. Great-great grandfather to Ellie.
Jack was the youngest and only son of John Springstead and Minnie Biggley. He was predeceased by his sisters Lois (Art Williams) and June (Ernie Page) and his father-in-law Lawrence Campbell. He is also survived by his sister Joan and her husband Tom Robertson, his brother-in- law Wayne Campbell and sister-and brother-in-law Sandra and Paul Chiang. Jack will be remembered fondly by many caring and supportive nieces, nephews and family members in Hamilton and throughout Canada. He will also be missed by many loyal and long-time friends, including Harry Serabian, Murray and Sondra Collier, June and Gerry Moore, Roger and Hazel Yarnold, Ron Surowaniec, Janice Mulhearn and his poker buddies who met monthly for the last 35 years. Thank you also to our wonderful neighbours for their support and friendship during this difficult time. A particular thanks to Heather and Dave Rayner for their assistance and encouragement. We would also like to the thank the LHIN staff, VON nurses and Personal Support Workers who helped care for Jack and allowed him to stay in the comfort of his own home. Most importantly we would like to thank Dr.Mulji, Jack’s long-time cardiologist for his outstanding care and compassion.
A Chartered Accountant, Jack retired as President of Guild Stationers in 2000 at age 65. He soon learned that the retirement lifestyle was not for him. He was happiest when working. He continued working independently, on a part-time basis, throughout his “retirement” up until a few months ago. He was our numbers guy.
Jack was a man of quiet but profound faith in God. He was a long-time member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Hamilton where he served as Eucharistic minister and layperson in service to the Church. Jack was also on the committee that worked on the annual Christmas Angel tree giving program. He worked tirelessly on the project to bring a Syrian family to Hamilton. His most passionate work was for the Saint Vincent De Paul Society, at the local church level and the Particular Council. He served on these committees for many years and was proud of their good work and achievements. During this time, Jack made many close friends. He valued and was grateful for their friendship.
Jack was a proud Canadian, Hamiltonian and East Ender. An obituary of a few lines cannot capture the legacy of this wonderfully kind and fun-loving husband, father and friend. There are so many stories and tales to be told. When the threat of Covid is over, a celebration of Jack’s life will be held to allow family and friends to share their stories. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. John the Baptist Church (King and Edgemont), Heart and Stroke Foundation or the SPCA.
A memorial and burial will be arranged at a later date.
