He was in his 88th year. Larry was born in Hamilton on October 18, 1933 where he lived and worked all his life. Larry dedicated his life to his family and instilled in all his children to work hard, never complain, and enjoy life to the fullest. He always had a joke to tell or card trick to show and a smile on his face. He was not only proud of his job as a meat cutter, but especially proud that he never took a sick day in his 49 years of work. He owned his own grocery store for several years at the corner of Main and Gage across the street from Gage Park called Slingerlands. At the age of 40 he closed the store and went to work for Fortinos as a meat cutter for another 25 years. He enjoyed the people he worked with, but even more so loved and valued his customers.
When he wasn’t working, Larry loved sports – whether it was playing baseball as a young man at Mahony Park and travelling across the border for tournaments, coaching basketball, getting a hole in one while golfing, watching his children play sports or watching any sports on TV. He was an avid Detroit Red Wings fan and loved and supported the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
At home, Larry enjoyed gardening and loved to show off his garden to friends and family – especially his “Rose of Sharon”. Larry was predeceased by the love of his life, Norma, to whom he was married for over 50 years. Larry and Norma did everything together and were inseparable, including weekly family hikes, square dancing, playing horseshoes, playing cards with friends, going to watch the Hamilton Cardinals play ball, golfing, cross country skiing, fishing and travelling. Many family trips were enjoyed to visit Norma’s family on the East Coast. Larry will be greatly missed by his children, Brian (Jill), Lynn (Jeff) Lubieniecki, Keith (Lisa), and Ray (Tara). He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Brittainy (Shawn), Nathan (Rei), Kyle, Vanessa, Samantha, Matthew, Ciarra, and great grandchild Finley. Larry is survived by sisters Barb Luker (the late Ron) and Lorraine Owen (Ernie). Larry will be laid to rest beside Norma at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Cemetery.
We want to thank the frontline staff at the Hamilton General Hospital, West Lincoln Hospital and the unbelievable staff at Albright Manor for all their work. We got a glimpse of what it’s like behind the front lines of the global pandemic and we are grateful for their dedication. We appeal to everyone to stay apart, stay home and stay safe.
As per Larry’s wishes cremation has taken place.
