Cherished mother of John (Diane), Katherine and Joseph. Loving grandmother of Kurt, Terry and Samantha and great-grandmother of Tyler. Dear sister of Jean. Survived by many nieces and nephews. She is reunited with her beloved husband Joseph of 59 years, her parents Mini Evelyn and Amos Edward, her sisters Madeline and Doris and her brothers John, Earl and Victor and her many friends.
Mabel lived life with bravery, courage, compassion, kindness, selflessness, generosity, gratefulness, passion and most of all, hard work ever since she was a young girl tending the cows on her family’s farm in Wainfleet. No running water, no plumbing and only an oil lamp for light. She was very proud of her Irish, English, French and German heritage from her parents.
She attended a one room school, walking 6 miles each day, no matter what the weather was. She learned to dance at a young age at the Seeneys Dance Hall and played the guitar. She went on to graduate from Port Colborne High School, working in the shoe factory, then moving to Hamilton to work at Westinghouse.
She met her beloved Joseph at a dance and got married on December 23, 1950. She was very proud of being able to build our family home in 1951 and it being the first house built on our street.
She loved knitting, sewing, baking, preserving fruits, vegetables and making jams and jellies. She was an excellent pie baker. She recycled, reused and refurbished before it became mainstream. She was so very proud to get her driver’s license in her late 50s and loved the independence it gave her. Her favourite flowers were carnations.
She had an unwavering commitment and deep love for Jesus and her Faith Lutheran Church family. She was part of the church’s women’s Gloria Deo Circle for decades, an integral part of the church family. She travelled the world later in life with her church family; walking the Great Wall of China, seeing the pyramids in Egypt, walking the Black Forest in Germany, seeing the volcanoes in Hawaii, going to Israel, Istanbul, Turkey, Amsterdam and many trips throughout Canada and the USA.
She was a devoted mother and she fiercely loved her children while allowing and instilling in them with the tools to grow and become self-reliant, independent, humble with a strong moral code of always doing what’s right based from a deep spiritual faith and love of God and His teachings. She had a deep wisdom of life.
Special thanks to her steadfast neighbours Walter, Marianne, Joseph and Susan, who have always been willing to help where help is needed. She touched many hearts throughout her journey in life and we will miss her immensely. She is happy now and we will all see each other again one day.
