

She is now reunited with her cherished husband of over 63 years, Ignaz (2022). Matilda will be lovingly remembered as the devoted mother of Anna (Frank) Banko and Liz (Steve) Matijasic. She was a proud grandmother to Natasha (Slavko) Grguric, Justin (Marina) Matijasic, Nicole (Brad) Cowie, and Brandon (Tamara) Banko, and adored Gigi to Eliana, Maksim, Ivano, Mateo, Finley, and Bryson. Matilda was predeceased by her parents, Matija and Marija, and her siblings Stjepan (the late Magdalena), Katarina (the late Stef), Marija (the late Mihael), Martin (the late Rozina), Barbara (the late Alojz), Ivan, and Ana. She leaves behind her sister-in-law Zora Zver (the late Ivan), numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends in Canada, Croatia, Germany, and Slovenia.
Born in Hotiza, Slovenia, Matilda immigrated to Canada in 1958, where she met the love of her life and began their journey together. In 1974, they fulfilled their dreams by acquiring property in Muskoka, where they dedicated countless hours to its transformation into a cherished retreat. Matilda's passion for gardening was evident in the beauty of her flower gardens and the success of her vegetable patches. Family always came first to Matilda, who nurtured strong bonds with loved ones and welcomed everyone with open arms. Her boundless love and generosity touched the lives of all who knew her.

Visitation will take place at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East (at Kenilworth), on Tuesday, March 12, from 4-8 pm, with prayers at 7:30 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Croatian Church, 1883 King Street East, on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at 11 am. The service will be livestreamed on Matilda's page at markeydermody.com. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Angels Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Matilda’s memory may be made to Holy Cross Church.
