Mrs. Hinich was my Grade 8 Teacher at Adelaide Hoodless  in the 1961-62 School-Year.  She actually started the year as Miss McCullough, married, and became Mrs. Hinich.  Sorry for such a late memo but I was unaware of her passing but instead just came across the 'In Memoriam'.  I remember her well as kind, soft-spoken, caring and a helpful Teacher.  Years later I became a Police Officer and I was directing traffic at the Canadian Open in Oakville when I saw a woman standing on the corner somewhat confused and perhaps lost.  I recognized her as my Mrs. Hinich.  When there was a pause in traffic, I walked over to her, re-introduced myself and asked if I could help.  She was so 'blown-away' by my presence and being an Officer.  Thank you Mrs. Hinich for always being nice, kind and thank you for being my Teacher.

          What can I say about Aunt Nancy,  Yes she was a fabulous teacher, But there was so much more to her.
         It was always so exciting to hear about Dave & Nancy's exotic trips.   As a little girl what was most exciting was that I had a doll collection and she would bring me a native doll from the country they had been visiting.  The last one was a Kolea bear from Australia.
         My Parents Margaret & Hugh took our family on a cruse to Alaska. We invited Dave & Nancy to join us ( they were a little hesitant at first)  But WOW did they take cursing to a new level.
        When Nancy started working out she invited me to join her for an aerobics class....  I'm still going to the gym (But Never as dedicated as Nancy )
       I sure will miss you and your smile at Sunday night dinners

 We were very sorry to hear the sad news of Nancy's passing.  She was such a wonderful teacher and such an asset to Orv's staff.  We will always remember her kind and friendly outgoing manner. I was my Aunt Nancy's flower girl and since my earliest memories I have been witness to her enduring Love and Lasting Marriage to my Uncle Dave.  Nancy and Dave enjoyed each other's company quietly at home and while travelling the world together; a great test of any relationship.  I recall several times they jumped on a plane to some exotic location, and they gave their theatre tickets to us!  It was a dirty job, but someone had to use them.
Nancy's strong belief in the power of education (passed down from her family) led her to university and then into teaching.  She was a well rounded person with a great appreciation of literature, theatre, and current events which made her a wonderful conversationalist.  
I have another sweet memory of Aunt Nancy to share.  When we were just out of university, freshly married and new home owners (around the corner from Dave and Nancy), we were invited to a wedding and I didn't own a nice dress to wear.  Nancy invited me to come over to her place and look through her closet.  She was always well dressed so I had no trouble finding a gorgeous dress for the special event.
I would like to thank Dave for all his love and care that he bestowed on Nancy.  She was well loved.

What I will always remember about Nancy and Dave is that wherever one met them,  the spirit of the place was uplifted by their presence.  Seeing Nancy in the room was an uplifting experience.  One knew that she would be doing something positive and kind.  Quite reassuring knowing that this small but dynamic person was going to make that place a better place in that moment.  I never knew her as a teacher,  only as a retired person;  yet I am not surprised by the students' comments here about her effect in various schools. Positivity and kindness.  My condolences Dave and your family.

So sorry to read of Nancy's passing. She was a kind and generous teacher, always willing to take the time to aid or commiserate with a more  inexperienced colleague.    After retirement, the "Chedoke Girls" enjoyed our many dinners and lunches together at a variety of  local restaurants. Her warm smile and lively conversation will be greatly missed!

When I was in grade school, my Aunt Nancy was a big help tutoring me in some subjects I required support in. I remember thinking, man, I better pay attention and ask lots of questions, because she would make sure I understood what was to be learned. My Aunt made me accountable at a very young age. 
As years went by, I was approached by men whom asked if was I was related to Nancy. I would smile and wait for the stories. The common denominator was that she wouldn’t put up with any Monkey business in her classroom, and she held them accountable. They all appreciated her toughness, but respected her presence while teaching. One man, actually started tearing up, while he told me his story. Nancy was tough teacher, meaning she didn’t accept excuses for not doing the work. She took the time and extra time,to help him. He said her support and volunteered time, resulted in him graduating. She helped him to believe in himself. That  conversation and impact has stuck with me ever since.
In conclusion, when you have impacted people’s lives in such a positive way, then you really have lived a great life.

Dave, I am so sorry for your loss.  I would sometimes come early to the Wednesday Sackville bridge game, not only to secure my table but also to assist if needed while you and Nancy set up.  I always felt calmer being in the gym with you two before everyone started coming in for the game.  My heart would beat a little faster when you and Nancy sat down e/w at our table as I knew that any contract attempted would be hard won as you two were such good players.  I will always remember Nancy as the kindest lady in pink.  Sharon Gendron

Mrs. Hinich was my grade eight teacher at Adelaide Hoodless School in 1964! She was a wonderful person and incredible teacher. She was the first teacher to display her Bachelor of Arts degree on the wall by the door. That made quite an impression on me. Later, when I retired from teaching I was fortunate enough to speak to her at my retirement dinner.  She left many people with great memories.

I have known Nancy for the past few years as an excellent bridge player.  Nancy is one of the kindest people I have ever met. She seemed to love everyone, especially her wonderful husband, Dave.  On summer nights we would often see them listening to, and enjoying music in the parks.  Nancy was a special person who will be very much missed by those who knew her.  My sincerest condolences go out to Dave..








I knew Nancy from Goodlife Fitness. She was so happy all the time, always smiling and we called her "the pink lady". She will be missed there at GL.

Mrs. Hinich was my Grade 8 English teacher at Highview School in 1975-76.  In 2019, just ahead of my own retirement from teaching, I was able to connect with her in a letter that I wrote to her thanking her for the very positive impact that she had on my education and eventual career path:  I'm so grateful that we were able to have that communication.  I extend my sincere condolences to Mrs. Hinich's family and friends.  

Growing up with my aunt’s name sake, over the years I ran into countless people who were strangers to me but knew my aunt as a teacher or by her volunteer work and would immediately share their story of knowing Nancy. It always made me smile to hear these random stories about the impact she made on their lives. 

She would often joke with me with a twinkle in her eye referring to herself as the “original Nancy Hinich” and she was exactly that - an original extraordinary woman who connected with people out of genuine curiosity to hear their story. 

When I moved to New York in 2005 Nancy regularly hand wrote me letters and it always gave me a piece of home reading her words about how my parents were doing, fitness, the latest show she attended or about her latest travels with her beloved David. And I know she delighted in reading the letters I would send her back - always with a teacher’s eye on my words and grammar of course. 

Aunt Nancy was an accomplished beloved and celebrated woman who lived a big life sharing that journey with her husband of almost 60 years walking proudly by her side. What an amazing life story that we can all aspire to - to just live a life of kindness. What a great lesson she taught all of us. 

I’ll miss those letters in the mail. 


Mrs. Hinich was my 6th grade homeroom teacher at Westview Middle School. She often found me walking to the library after track practice and would give me a ride in her silver Corvette (on the days she wasn't riding her bike, of course). She was also so encouraging when I ran for student council president and went out of her way to offer kind words whenever she saw me. Years later I would run into her at the gym and she never forgot who I was! She was a great woman and a dedicated educator.

So sorry to hear of this. Nancy was one of my favourite teachers at Chedoke. Always remember her driving her Corvette.

We were saddened to read of Nancy’s passing.  I taught with Nancy at Chedoke Public School......too many years ago to remember exactly when.  Nancy was responsible for making it possible for us to bring into our home our first English Setter, Jessie.  Jessie was the pet of your neighbours and they could not keep her any longer.  Nancy, being the kind person she was, helped find a new home for Jessie and that was US!  We were forever grateful that she did that.  You are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

What great memories I have of Nancy, first at Adelaide Hoodless where I met her. I was a rookie and Nancy took me under her wing.  She was one of the most accomplished teachers I have ever worked with.  Later, at Chedoke PS, Nancy hosted our staff bridge club tables at her beautiful home on Fennell Avenue--the one we could always pick out with the tree in the middle of the driveway.  We loved playing there because Nancy was such a great hostess. Later in my life, after we were both retired, I would run into Nancy and Dave at concerts around town in Hamilton and once, accidentally, on board a cruise ship when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. She radiated energy, enthusiasm and warmth always. Yes great memories. A woman to be proud of.

It is difficult to say goodbye to Nancy.  Many years of interesting conversations encountered at the McDonalds Westdale 1955 Coffee Club which has been interrupted by the virus for a year.  David, you will be in our thoughts and hope you will visit when the Coffee Club reconvenes.

David I am sorry to hear of Nancy’s passing.  Nancy brought such  joy to my Mom when they would play bridge together and both of your kindness to my parents will never be forgotten
When I worked at St Joes, I would see her in the lobby with that great smile enticing me to buy some tickets.  Everyone who met her left with a smile on their face and some tickets‼️
