Ovid Colin Joseph

Ovid or as he was fondly known as Deryck, Peppi or Grandfather was born on February 7, 1935 to Stephanie Solomon and Adolphus Joseph in Georgetown, Guyana. He was the 5th eldest of 17 children. He is survived by 14 of his siblings. Deryck was married to the late Hytle Skeffers with whom he shared 6 children. He will be greatly missed by Derick (Pamela), Donald (Deirdre), Dane, Dion, the late Delene, and Denika. He will be missed by his grandchildren Andrea Smith (Vibert), Althea, Ian, Deshawn, Chantel, Bianca, Devon (Rochelle), Quincy, Brianna, Alicia, Colin, Chelsea, Quiara and Kyla as well as his 7 great grandchildren.

Deryck attended school until the age of 14. He then began an apprentice program learning to install windows and then learned pipe fitting. Although Deryck did not graduate high school, he was an avid reader and self educator. There was not a topic that he could not speak on. He later got a job at the bauxite plant in Linden, where he went on to become general foreman.

When the opportunity was presented for him to migrate to Canada he took the opportunity and became a bricklayer until he retired. During that time he sent for all 6 of his children to reside with him and cared for them. Deryck later married Carol Wright, they were married for 10 years. In 2013 Deryck went back to Guyana where he then Married Vera Williams. Deryck returned to Canada permanently in June of 2021 to be close to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Through the years, Deryck was an active member of the East End Seventh Day Adventist Church, Stoney Creek Church of God and Lifeline Worship Centrewhere he was fondly known as Brother Joe. He will be missed by the members of these churches. Visitation will be held at CRESMOUNT FUNERAL HOME, 322 Fennell Avenue E. on Tuesday, December 7th from 12noon-1pm. Burial to follow at Mt. Hamilton Cemetery. Repass will be held at the Hamilton Filipino Community Centre, 1275 King Street E. from 3pm to 6pm. Due to COVID-19 vistation and funeral services will be held at limited capacity.
